The Last Update of 2013/2014 School Year...

Dear Students,

What an amazing year we've had together! We learned so much together and worked so hard to meet all of our goals this school year.  I've got a few challenges for all of our 2nd grade students.  See if you are up to it and email me this summer to let me know how you are doing!

Challenge #1:  Choose a chapter book that is over 150 pages and read it in two weeks.  Email me and tell me about the main character and how this character changes from the beginning to the end.

Challenge #2:  Pick a set of addition, subtraction, or multiplication facts to practice every night for 10 minutes.  Have your parents test you using Math Magician after one week.  What is your time?  Email me with your scores!

Challenge #3:  Choose one of the following historical figures. Look him/her up on the internet and find out why you think they are a historical figure that we study.  Email me three facts about your person. (Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony)

Challenge #4: Use the internet to find out what a mineral is.  Send me a list of 5 different minerals and what their importance is.

Challenge #5:  Use the internet to give the definition of a fossil.  Write five facts about fossils.

I can't wait to hear from you!  I hope you have fun exercising that brain this summer and I promise to send you an email message back and maybe ask you a few more questions that you can look up and answer for me!

Dear Parents,

If you are up for it, I have a few challenges for you as well!  Here are some ideas that will provide not only some great quality time with your child but will also have immeasurable effects on your child's learning!  Let me know how it's going and what you think...

Challenge #1:  Read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle or Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls to your child. Read a chapter a night out loud to your child, even if they want to be the reader!  Children at this age still need to be read to in order to hear what good expression and fluency sounds like. "Great readers are created on the laps of their parents!"

Challenge #2:  Get a notebook for your child. Every other night at bedtime, write one or two questions in the notebook for your child to answer right before he/she falls asleep. Read his/her responses and write a reply back.  I would ask my girls questions like "What has been your favorite family vacation?" or "What is your favorite holiday and why?"  You can even include little pictures! My girls loved to read the questions and looked forward to seeing what I wrote back to them each week!
