We've had a wonderful week, and we haven't wasted a minute! Please take a minute to look over the information below to keep you up-to-date with what we've been learning in our fabulous 2nd grade class. I loved all the extra credit posters the children shared this week. This project really helped extend our learning about this important Georgia resource. The participants' reward will be to go have ice cream one afternoon after school with me (my treat, of course!) Be on the lookout in a few weeks for more opportunities! Also, parents, we began our new chapter book last week; Charlotte's Web. As a culminating activity, we will have a "movie night" at my house one evening. As soon as we get further along in the book, I will let you know the date for this event.
Phonics: This week in phonics, we learned all about the short and long u spelling pattern and we continued our discussion of compound words. We took a short quiz, which the children did wonderful on, to assess how we are doing with our sounding out of words. Please pay special attention to this assessment. It will be in your child's blue folder.
Reading: We read the big book, My Grandmother's Patchwork Quilt. We focused on reading fluency. At home, please emphasize good oral reading skills. Children at this age should be reading with expression, aware of punctuation, and reading at a steady, consistent pace. Model good reading fluency and have your child mimic this if this is an area that your child is weak in. We also worked in small groups according to your child's reading level. We focused on summarizing a story as well as using the text to support answers to comprehenstion questions. The children completed their reading contracts on their independent books for the week. We have been reading and discussing Charlotte's Web, using the book to help us answer important comprehension questions. We've also used a Venn diagram to help us compare characters in the book to ourselves.
Math: We began our unit on addition this week. We have learned many strategies that help us add quickly and correctly. Remember to help your child study those math facts! Memorization of the single addition facts will come in handy when we begin double digit addition with regrouping next week. We are beginning to move very quickly through our math concepts.
Social Studies: We read and discussed the important resources in Georgia, focusing on the importance of the rivers. We also learned about ways that humans have an effect on the environment. We read a short passage and answered questions about the passage. This is helping us to prepare for the CRCT in the spring.
Have a wonderful and restful weekend!
-Mrs. Wadsworth
