Hello Parents and Students,
We've had a great, productive week. The kids have been working very hard on their writing skills. The kids were very excited to visit the computer lab this week. They wrote summaries of a story that we read in class, added clipart, then printed their masterpieces! Check out the blue folder for your child's summary. One thing that I have instituted here in the classroom is, when I ask a question, the children must answer the question in a complete sentence. Writing in complete sentences that are not run-ons seems to be a struggle, so if the children begin thinking in complete sentences and speaking in complete sentences, then the writing in complete sentences will follow. Please enforce this kind of communication at home as much as you can. It will really help your child's writing.
Our class is in need of individually wrapped candy for our candy basket. I prefer small treats, such as starbursts, now and laters, etc.
Connor Glass was our first "Terrific Kid" award recipient! He exhibited "integrity" and has been a model student for his peers! Way to go, Connor!
Movie Night in the Garden is this Saturday. Check out the flyer in your child's folder for more details.
Charlotte's Web Movie Night at my house is next Friday, October 9th. Please return the RSVP by next Wednesday. The kids are so excited! It will be a fun night and it will provide us with some good material for comparing and contrasting.
There is one more week in the nine week week grading period. There is also one more week to earn AR points! Keep reading!
Check out what we've been doing in each subject area...
Phonics: We have reviewed all of the spelling patterns for this nine week period, which includes digraphs, l-blends, r-blends, and all the long and short vowels. We will have a summative assessment next week.
Writing: We continue to work on personal narratives. The final writing assessment will be given next week, as well. Your child is expected to be able to independently generate a topic, and then write an organized 5-8 sentence paragraph on this topic. I expect correct conventions which include second grade appropriate spelling as well as using capitalization, punctuation, and grammar correctly. We also have been working on writing short summaries of stories that we are reading. This skill involves finding and restating the main ideas in stories, as well as identifying the characters and setting.
Reading: We have been working on identifying story elements and summarizing. We are enjoying our shared reading book, Charlotte's Web. We have also read Tikki Tikki Tembo, Stellaluna, and Pinduli this week. These are great stories that have helped us work on our skills.
Math: We completed our unit on double digit addition with regrouping, but we will continue with this skill all year long. This is something your child will see repeatedly, so please practice this skill at home. We also began our unit on Money. We have used money manipulatives this week to practice counting coins with values up to $1.00. Next week, we will introduce bills and making change. Please practice this at home as well.
Social Studies: We completed our unit on the Creek People and we are beginning our unit on the Cherokee People. We will be comparing these two tribes to each other and to present day Georgians. We will also learn about Sequoyah and his contributions. Be on the lookout Monday for a special mandatory project related to these people groups. This project will be due on Monday, October 12th.
Have a super weekend and get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather!
