November 12, 2009 Update...

Dear Parents and Students,

We have had a great week in 2nd Grade! I can't brag enough on my 2nd graders this week in regard to their reading! I was thrilled when I pulled up the new AR reports and saw how motivated the students have been. Keep up the great job! We also had a wonderful visit from Mrs. Snyder, who is currently serving in the Air Force Reserve. She spoke to us on Veteran's Day about what it is like serving our country in the military. We visited the computer lab on Thursday and took our second SRI (scholastic reading inventory) to assess the children's progress in reading comprehension. You will find your child's score along with suggested reading titles on his/her level. Refer to the conversion chart I sent home at the beginning of the year to see what our goal is for this nine weeks.

Phonics: We continued to explore various ways of spelling short and long e words. We also reviewed more complex spelling patterns and prefixes and suffixes.

Reading: Our books for this week are The Chalk Box Kid, Horrible Harry, and Danny and the Dinosaur depending on your child's reading level. We are working on inferencing (using clues within the text to comprehend unsaid meaning) as well as reading fluency.

Writing: We continue our Response to Literature writing. The children are becoming experts in this style of writing. I appreciate all of your extra attention and help you have been giving your child at home in this area. The students writing is showing it! This week, we also worked on using contractions correctly in our writing.

Math: We continue to work on increasingly more challenging skills related to subtraction. This week, we focused on using addition to check our subtraction. Next week, we will begin combining addition and subtraction problems, so the children will have to show their ability to know when to do which operation, as well as remember the rules for regrouping in each instance.

Science: We completed our unit on Energy and began our unit on Force. Your child will be bringing home his/her science workbook next week. Please make sure your child understands the concept of Force and can independently answer the questions in the workbook.

Other Classroom News and Reminders...

Congratulations goes to Shawn Brooks for earning the Terrific Kid award for our class. Shawn exhibited excellent "citizenship" qualities. He consistently puts into practice our five rules to live by (active listening, no put-downs, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and personal best). Way to go!

Thank you, Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Glass, for your help in our classroom this week!

I hope you and your child discussed a food that is special to your family this week! Remember, it does not have to be a traditional thanksgiving food, but rather any food that has significance for your and your family. The kids are so excited for this activity. You are welcome to join us on Tuesday at 11:30 (no siblings, please).

Please also plan to join us on Thursday at 10:30 for the Thanksgiving Lunch prepared by our fabulous cafeteria staff. You won't want to miss this!

This will be the last blog update until after Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday!
