Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for visiting our blog today! We had an amazing week. We had so much fun on our field trip Thursday to the Cobb Safety Village. In addition to learning all about protecting ourselves in a fire, we also learned about bus, bike, pedestrian, electrical, and gun safety. This was a very interactive field trip and I think the children really learned some valuable information. This week, we also visited the computer lab, where we took the SRI (scholastic reading inventory) assessment. I'll be sharing those results with you at our conference. We had our monthly counseling lesson with Mrs. Charrette as well. Check out below to find out what we've been doing in each subject area and pay special attention to an extra credit opportunity.
Phonics/Grammar: We learned about short i, short 0 and long i long o spelling patterns. We also reviewed blends, as well as continuing our discussion of suffixes and the spelling rules that apply.
Reading: We read the book They Worked Together which is a nonfiction story about extraordinary groups of people in history and how they worked together to accomplish great things. We used this book to learn all about important nonfiction features such as bold words, table of contents, the index, glossary, and captions. We completed several more chapters on our read aloud, The BFG. We worked independently on chapter books and answered comprehension questions. We also worked in small groups on the skill of proving our answers through the text.
Writing: We worked together this week to write an informational paragraph on grasshoppers. We first read a book together and completed an organizer whole group. Then, the children took our ideas and wrote their own paragraphs. This writing will be in the hallway for you to see next week when you come up for conferences.
Math: We completed our unit on fractions. We also began our review of greater numbers and how we can represent them. We worked on showing written form, expanded form, base ten form, and place value form for numbers in the thousands. The children also worked on learning their -7 facts. This was challenging and many children need to devote some additional time to learning these facts. Please encourage your child to do this, as it will greatly help with multi-digit computation.
Social Studies: We studied the many important contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the lasting changes these contributions had on the history of our country.
