February 19th, 2010 Update...

Dear Parents and Students,

We've had a super week! We all enjoyed the extra credit invention presentations this week. We learned about the stethoscope from Madeline Conrad and Dr. White, her grandfather. We learned about the invention of the Nintendo hand held game from Andie Sampsell and her mother. We also learned about the microwave oven from Elizabeth Thompson and her mother. I want to commend these students for their extra time and effort! You can view their visuals in our hallway. I hope to see many of you at Curriculum Night next Thursday at 6:00. This will be a great opportunity for you to come and check out our smart boards that will be in every classroom by the springtime. 2nd grade will be meeting in Mrs. Soto's room, but you will also be able to visit the art room, the music room, writing lab, science lab and gym for many fun activities. We took our 7 minute subtraction timed test this week. If your child scored below an 85%, he/she will be retaking the quiz every Friday until this score is achieved. Please help your child by encouraging visiting our blog or using flashcards. Remember, if he/she is couting on fingers, the facts are not memorized!

Phonics: We continued our study of r-controlled vowels this week, learning about the sounds -ir, -er, -ur, -ire, and -ier.

Writing: We reviewed the conventions of letter writing (correct capitalization, punctuation, and placement of items) as well as informational writing on the Hubble Telescope after reading a nonfiction passage.

Reading: We are finishing up our independent chapter books. We also worked with short passages on identifying sentences that helped us answer our questions. We worked in small groups on identifying the main idea in short stories. We also worked on inferencing, which is using context clues to draw conclusions. We read several chapters in our read aloud, Stuart Little.

Math: We began working in small groups depending on the students' needs according to the Benchmark Exam we took last week. The skills we focused on this week were multi-step word problems, showing place value representation of greater numbers, and comparing fractions. By far, the most challenging concept is solving the multi-step problem. Please continue to review this at home by correcting any incorrect work that comes home. You'll find several worksheets in the blue folder this week. We also took our 7 minute timed test on subtraction facts.

Class News and Reminders...

Thank you to all the parents who have sent in individually wrapped candy, prize box toys (we still have a need!) and Mr. Clean magic erasers. Also, thank you to Dr. White, Mrs. Sampsell, and Mrs. Thompson for coming in and presenting on the invention extra credit! We learned so much from these presentations! Maybe we've inspired a future inventor!

Thank you, Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Thompson, for helping the students with AR this week!

We are still battling some nasty germs in our room! I thought this may be a good time to review the county policy on returning to school after a sickness...please keep your child home for a full 24 hours after any episode of vomiting or other intestinal illness. Also, please do not allow your child to return to school until a fever has been absent without the use of fever reducers for a full 24 hours. We will continue to encourage hand washing here at school, as well as daily cleaning of the room.

On that note, we are completely out of disinfecting wipes and kleenex. I would like for each boy to bring in kleenex and each girl to bring in wipes. Thank you for your donations.
