March 18, 2010 Update...

Hello Parents and Students,

Thank you for visiting today. I have been so amazed at the pace that the children are learning these days! It seems like everyone has really started to apply the many concepts we've been learning this year. I'm so pleased with the children's writing and reading. I've actually had the class ask on several days to take their chapter books to lunch to read...ahhh! Music to a teacher's ears! I have to commend you parents! Your child's eagerness to learn is a direct reflection of some awesome parenting! Check out below to see what we've been learning this week...oh! and the secret agenda word for this week is "Faolan". Ask your child who that is!

Phonics: This week, we have learned about the spelling patterns -oi and -oy. We have also used our new I-Respond system (ask your child about this also!) to take several spelling tests. This mode of testing is very revealing, as the student must choose the correctly spelled word among several choices.

Reading: We have been working in small groups on the books King Midas and the Golden Touch, Hooray for Rhody, and Goldsworth and Mort Blast Off. The skills we've addressed are how prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of words, identifying the problem and resolution in a story, and sequencing events in a story. We also have been reading Lone Wolf and discussing the skill of inferencing to get at hidden meanings in texts.

Math: In math, we have been learning several different strategies for solving multiplication problems which include drawing a picture, drawing arrays, using a number line to skip count, and using a multiplication chart. Please remember to encourage your child to practice on the websites listed below. Remember these facts will give your child a great advantage next year in third grade! We have also been working in small groups on using our higher level thinking skills to solve complex word problems. These problems are called "constructed responses" and they really tell me who is able to apply the strategies we've been using all year, rather than just applying a formula without first processing what the question is asking. Next week, we'll be moving on to our x2 multiplication facts. Get those awards printed and turned in before next Friday!

Class News and Reminders...

Report cards are coming home today! Please follow the instructions on the paper inside the brown envelope. Remember to affix two stamps, as additional postage will be needed for the final report cards. We are hoping to have CRCT results back by then to send home as well!

Friday is crazy sock day, sponsored by the YMCA (listen to Mrs. Pepper's phone message!). Your child may wear crazy socks to school if she/he wished to donate a dollar to this fund.

Thank you to Mrs. Sampsell, Mrs. Conrad, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Ketch for their help last week at the Coke Float AR celebration! Also, thank you to those who sent in donations for the celebrations. The kids had so much fun!

Remember to continue your encouragement of reading at home. The new AR goals for the final nine weeks have been set.
