Hello Parents and Students,
We've had a wonderful week! I am so proud of the students! We took our nine week benchmark assessment in math on Thursday, and our class average jumped from a 71% (pretest) to an 89% (post test)! What a wonderful improvement! We even had two perfect scores, which is quite an accomplishment as this test is very challenging. We have three more weeks of instruction until the CRCT. We will begin this test the Wednesday after spring break. I appreciate all the extra help you are providing your child at home in the areas that you see weaknesses. Please check out below to see what else has been going on in our fabulous 2nd grade classroom! One more thing...I KNOW every parent reads this blog in detail, so as an extra reward for your effort, if you write the secret code word "CANDY" in your child's agenda, he/she will get a trip to the candy basket!
Phonics/Grammar: We learned all about the punctuation needed when writing quotes on sentences. We also reviewed segmenting words to count syllables and to help us sound out challenging multisyllable words. We discussed subject/verb agreement (if the subject is singular, add the -s to the verb AND if the subject is plural, do not add an -s to the verb).
Writing: We used an organizer to plan then write our autobiographies. We focused on adding details and applying the correct conventions. We also read several Georgia Book Nominees, then summarized the stories.
Math: We completed our nine week reviews and took the benchmark assessment.
Reading: We read a variety of poems this week. We learned about poetic features and answered comprehension questions. We also worked in small groups on the books Si Won's Victory and Jack and the Beanstalk. We worked on various skills with our independently selected chapter books as well.
Class News and Reminders...
Thank you, Elizabeth Thompson and Shawn Brooks, for your book donations to our classroom! We can't wait to start reading these great new books!
The students will have an Early Release day on Wednesday, March 10th. School will be dismissed two hours early.
Our next AR celebration is Friday, March 12 at 1:15. The theme of this celebration will be "Coke Floats and Extreme Recess", as you know by reading Mrs. Brooks' email. If you have any fun outdoor recess activities, you may send them in with your child next Friday. Some suggestions would be side walk chalk, bubbles, hoola hoops, jumpropes, balls, etc.
The end of this quarter is Thursday, March 11. Report cards will be distributed the following week. As always, I am available for conferencing if you have questions or concerns.
