January 20, 2012 Update...

Dear Parents,
Thank you for visiting the blog to stay informed and up-to-date with our class happenings!  Remember to add some study time to your weekly routine in regards to the phonics focus words that are coming home.  Our spelling patterns are increasing in difficulty and your child may need some extra time to continue to get those 3's and 3+'s!  I am so proud of the children's increased independence this week!  We haven't had any missing folders and I'm having lots of students come up and ask those important questions they need answered to be successful!  Super parenting going on at home!!!

Phonics/Grammar: This week we focused on the long and short i vowel sound, particularly the long sound made with the bossy e.  We made our own word webs to help prepare us for the test on Friday, we played sparkle, we used our white boards to practice sounding out the words, and we completed a sort in our journals.  We also worked on identifying compound words in our guided reading groups.  Some children are still confusing compound words with two syllable words. Check your child's next reading contract to see if this may be a skill that needs extra practice at home.

Writing:  We learned how to improve our "how to" writing through the use of hooks, cool closings, and the use of transition words and phrases other than first, next, then, last.  We also learned how to revise our writing by going back and adding details to our already written steps. We made a "how to" book, which is on display in our hallway. We worked individually with Mrs. W to revise and edit our books.

Reading:  This week, we worked on making connections with the stories that we are reading.  We read the story Stone Soup and made connections to our lives and to other texts.  We also worked on visualization to help us comprehend the story.  We read the story Dogteam and drew illustrations that showed our understanding.  We worked in groups to practice fluency when reading.  We also worked with the books Amalia and the Grasshopper, Henny Penny and Goldilocks and the Other Bears to complete our independent contracts.

Math:  In math, we came back to our subtraction skills using greater numbers. We also worked in groups on coming up with strategies for solving word problems where equal groups, finding the missing addend, and decomposing numbers are used.

Social Studies:  We learned about Harriet Tubman and her contributions to creating equality for all.  We watched several videos describing Harriet and her work to free slaves.  We made a web, listing things we learned about Harriet.  We also went on our own underground railroad journey, learning about important events in Harriet's life.
