February 3, 2012 Update...

Hello Parents,

I am so impressed with the reading I have seen this week! Everyone met our goal of two or more tests taken and passed.  We will continue this for the remainder of the school year.  You can help me at home by making sure your child is reading books on his/her level. Books that can be read in a night or two go all the way up to 6th grade level, so everyone in our class can be challenged by this goal.  I try, along with Mrs. Huffstetler and Mrs. Douglas, to double check the levels on the books that are being checked out, but some may slip by us.  No one in our class should be reading a book that is lower than a 1.7.  Check out below to see what else we have been doing in our room this week!

Phonics:  We learned about the long u sound in comparison to the short u sound.  We completed our word webs to help us study, we worked on the white boards to practice sounding out, and we completed a sort.

Writing:  We began learning about how to write informational paragraphs.  We researched all about groundhogs, completed an organizer, then wrote our rough drafts and final copies.  These papers are on display in the hallway.  We focused on the editing process and revising process.  The students learned that editing is looking for mistakes in the punctuation, capitalization, spelling and format of the paper and revising is going back and adding more to make the paper better.

Reading:  We learned how to read nonfiction passages and find key information using strategies such as underlining the title and headings, numbering our paragraphs, and grouping like details.  We also compared fiction and nonfiction stories on related topics.  We worked in small groups and individually reading books on our level.

Math:  We completed our unit on fractions and began learning about time.  We worked with small clocks to show time to the hour and half hour.  We also learned how to write the time correctly.  This is a difficult skill for some because most clocks are not analog. Please help your child with this at home if you notice papers that indicate this might be a challenge.

Science:  We are learning about our 7 continents.  We learned a song to help us remember their names, we went through several smartboard activites that were interactive, and we created our own maps.

Classroom News and Announcements...

Congratulations to the following students for taking on the Challenge Project last week...Drew, Chayse, Alexis, Colin, Cristina, Chloe, Luke, Aubrey, and Frank!  Way to go!  Be on the lookout next week for another opportunity!

It's not to late to send in your teddy bears!  Just attach the red heart that came home on Thursday and we will display your bear in the media center!

Make sure you are encouraging your child to devote time each night to practicing math facts.  We have many children who have completed all the addition and subtraction facts.  Once your child gets through the -7, -8, and -9 set, he/she will take a 5 minute/100 problem mixed addition and subtraction quiz.  After this, it's on to multiplication!  Way to go!

Don't forget to put the Kemp Mardi Gras Dance on your calendar!  I plan on boogying late into the night next Friday...well, okay, at least until 8:30!

Academic Alerts will be coming home next Friday. If your child is in danger of receiving a "1" in any area, he/she will receive this letter.

Remember to take a good look at the top section of your child's blue behavior sheet.  The children are aware that we are really focusing on keeping our materials organized, finishing work in an appropriate amount of time, and asking for help when something is unclear. Although your child may not be exhibiting what we tend to say is "bad" behavior, we also want to begin focusing on maturity and responsibility in these areas as well.
