Hi Parents,
We've had a great week. Check out below to find out what we've been studying in each subject area. Also, there is a new Challenge Project below for your child to take advantage of. I have to take just a minute to brag on all the students today! I am so proud of their behavior as well as their quality of work. I have been absolutely blown away by how wonderful the response to literature writing has been this week. Look for those incredible papers in your child's folder this week. Also, I am so impressed with the mature behavior I have been seeing. These students are certainly behaving more like 2nd graders than 1st graders! Please take a minute to tell your child that their hard work and good behavior has been noticed!
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned all about the inflectional endings -s and -ies. We learned the rules for when to apply these endings in words that end in a -y. We also reviewed what plural and singular mean and when to use which form of the word.
Reading: We began our first author study on Cynthia Rylant. We read several books from the Henry and Mudge series as well as other books written by this author. We completed a Venn diagram to compare several characters from her books, we retold a story by this author, and we wrote two independent response to literature papers to recommend this story to a friend. We also completed several comprehension activities where we showed our ability to prove our answers to questions by looking back in the story and also by restating the question when answering. We read several chapters out of our read aloud, Dolphin Song. The children are so excited to learn all about Martine's adventures as she goes on a field trip to watch the sardine run along the coast of Africa.
Writing: We looked at a response to literature containing several missing components and we rewrote the paper, adding these parts. We then wrote two of our own response to literature papers.
Math: We learned about measuring length and height this week using nonstandard units of measurement. We completed several activities to practice using our math vocabulary "shorter than", "taller than", "longer than", and "shorter than". We also learned about the history of the ruler and how standard units of measurement came to be.
Social Studies: We began our unit on American folktales, learning all about Johnny Appleseed and the important character traits he possesses.

CHALLENGE ACTIVITY...Due April 27th
We are learning all about American folk heroes that have influenced our country. Your job for this challenge activity will be to research an American folk hero who we have NOT studied and teach us all about him or her. Here are the directions...
1. Choose an American folk hero that we are not studying (CAN'T be Appleseed, Oakley, Bunyon, or Henry)
2. Find the book or excerpt from the internet and bring in to class to read
3. Divide a poster into four sections
4. In the first section, draw the folk hero and print his/her name at top
5. In the second section, list all the factual details about your hero
6. In the third section, list all the exaggerated or unrealistic details surrounding your folk hero
7. In the last section, list the character trait that your folk hero displays and tell how that is accomplished
8. Practice reading your folktale and orally presenting your poster
