Hello Parents and Students,
Thank you for visiting our blog today! Check out what we've done in each subject area this week! Also, don't forget to read the "Class News and Reminders" section for important information.
Phonics/Spelling: This week, we began previewing our first spelling list as well as our phonics focus (the use of "ck" after short vowels in words). We played a game of sparkle, worked on our white boards to spell and sound out words, wrote sentences for each word, and practiced alphabetizing our words. Be on the lookout Monday for the spelling words in your child's agenda! Remember, each unit will last two weeks!
Writing: We reviewed adjectives and their purpose in a sentence. We created an acrostic of adjectives using the letters in our names. We also wrote a reader's response to the story, First Day Jitters in which we summarized the story, made a connection, and told whether or not we would recommend the book to a friend.
Reading: We listened to the story First Day Jitters and reviewed a variety of skills. We picked out verbs from the sentences and wrote synonyms for these verbs, we wrote a text to self connection (what the story reminds us of), and we used our inferencing skills to determine the hidden messages in the story. We began our first chapter book read aloud, The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. We talked about setting and wrote a paragraph describing the setting, we looked at the traits of the three main characters, and we identified cause/effect events in the story. We will be having our orientation lesson in the Media Center next Friday. After that, your child will have access to check out books. We will have required reading and AR tests (3 passing grades per week) at that point.
Math: We began our unit on place value/numbers in base ten. We looked at the number 10 and all the ways we can decompose (break apart). We had discussions about various ways to add large double digit numbers mentally and practiced a new skill called "branching" (dividing numbers into easier chunks to add mentally). We also completed a short unit on graphing. We made a class graph showing the season our birthdays are in, a graph showing the number of letters in our names, then we independently created a graph from information collected on a tally chart about our favorite first week activities.
Science: We created a factual brochure containing information about our chinchillas. We researched their habitat, diet, and social interactions on the Internet to create this brochure.
Class News and Information...
We began Celebrity of the Week today! This will be how our class celebrates each child in a special way. Peyton Velasco earned the privilege of being our FIRST celebrity!
Please make sure you have returned all important papers to me by Monday.
The 2nd graders participated in a special activity this Friday. We traveled around to all of the teachers' rooms to preview the many topics we will be covering this year! We learned a multiplication game, watched an informational video about the native Georgians, learned about states of matter, the Georgia regions, and how to become a better reader among other things! Ask your child what they are excited to learn this year!
Remember, we will NOT be having class snack after this week. Please send in a healthy snack each day.
Graded papers have been coming home! Please discuss your child's academic progress with him/her when looking at these.
Thank you, Mrs. Vansant, for helping collate our Georgia Regions books for next week!
Thank you to all the parents who sent in Wish List items!
Dinner Conversation Starters (use this to pry information out of your child about school!)...
*ask your child who Count Olaf is and what they think of him
*ask your child how he/she can quickly add 11+59 mentally
*ask your child what interesting position certain chinchillas hold in the wild
*ask your child to name one rule to live by is and what the hand motion that accompanies it is
