We've had a great week! There are a few projects that the students will be working on that I wanted to make sure you knew about. The first is the geometric shape project. This is an extra credit project and is not mandatory. Your child brought home the packet of information on Wednesday. There will also be a mandatory moon phases project coming home on Monday. It is a month-long project that will require your child to do just a little bit of work each night. Check out below to see what else we've been learning this week.
Phonics/Grammar: We learned the new vocabulary/spelling words from our James and the Giant Peach chapter book. We also continued our study of the spelling rules that are applied to short and long vowel words when adding endings.
Reading: We shared our five items that had significance in regards to The Chocolate Touch. We began our new chapter book, James and the Giant Peach. We looked carefully at phrases used in the book (sensory details) and what the author was telling us about the setting of the story. We also read independently and with a partner and then answered comprehension questions on this book. We used illustrations to show our knowledge of what we've read so far.
Math: We began our unit on geometric shaped, comparing plane shapes and 3-d shaped using specified attributes. We created a book that gave details about each shape.
Writing: We independently wrote stories about why we think Jackie Robinson is an American hero. (persuasive writing)
Science: We began our unit on the sun and stars. We read out of our text book and completed a flip book. We read books with our book buddies and completed an organizer showing the main idea of our book as well as details. We created a sundial, used a compass to mark the dial, and then watched how the shadow on the dial moves according to the sun's position.
Class News...
Yearbook orders are due soon! The price went up to $35.
Don't forget to complete and return the six flags reading log by 2/22. I will not be accepting late forms.
Make sure your child is keeping up with his/her AR goal. We are half way through the grading period already! Remember, your child can check his/her own progress on the AR program. Make sure you are only looking at this nine week's period.
The school dance is next Friday! Remember to wear black or/and white! It will be a fun night!
I have been giving, on average, about five children who have forgotten snack from home something out of our reserve stash. To say the least, we have completely gone through the donations from the Meireles, the Farleys, and the Dickinsons. I'm not sure if I should collect more, or just ask that you make sure your child has a healthy snack EVERY day. As for now, we are out of extras.
