April 29, 2013 Update...

Hi Parents,
Thank you for visiting the blog today! Can you believe we only have 19 days of school left?  And two of them are early release days!!!  I am so proud of the progress we've made over the last 360 days...I'm lucky to get to see these students' growth for more than just the 180 days.  Let's keep up the hard work and high expectations for the next three and a half weeks and finish the year strong.  Check out below to see what we've been doing in class.

Phonics:  We learned the r-controlled words.  We reviewed putting words in alphabetical order when the beginning letters are the same.  We used the words in context in sentences to practice their meaning and we sorted the words in our Word Study Notebook.  We also played several rounds of SPARKLE to practice spelling the words.

Reading:  We continued with our chapter book, The Wind in the Door.  We also read and compared several fables.  We identified the personification in each story (animals or insects taking on human characteristics) and we answered comprehension questions for each story.  The children were all given their final Developmental Reading Assessment.

Writing:  We reviewed the important components of a narrative and wrote and edited our stories.  We made sure to include important details such as how we felt, what we saw, and what we heard.  We will be writing our final copies this week.  These stories will be displayed in the hallway.

Math:  We continued our learning of multiplication strategies.  We learned how to draw sets, make arrays, show repeated addition and skip count on a number line to show multiplication.  We also reviewed computation strategies for addition and subtraction to 1000 with regrouping.  I'm so proud of the deep understanding your children are able to communicate when it comes to working with numbers. COMMON CORE MATH rocks!!!

Science:  We are observing our painted lady butterflies. We've illustrated their stages in our interactive notebook and taken notes on their behavior.  We also make a flip book on the four stages of a butterfly's life using pasta!  We read in our science books to learn about life cycles of animals and insects.

Class News...

Thank you for your donations to our Market Day!  Keep the contributions coming!  I'll be getting in touch with those volunteering to help towards the end of the week regarding what I'll need from you.

Tug will be visiting our class on Tuesday for a special treat!
