March 28, 2014 Update...

Dear Parents,

If you are reading this update, you are in the minority I'm sure!  I know everyone's brain is on SPRING BREAK and not on school at this point.  But I will update you with our class happenings...

Phonics/Grammar:  We learned the two spelling patterns of /oo/ and we reviewed long vowel sounds.  We also learned more complex punctuation and capitalization rules, such as what to do with a poem title, book title, and city and state names.

Reading: We read several chapters in Horns and Wrinkles. We discussed character traits of the main characters, providing text evidence.  We also took a test on the details and inferences in chapter 11. We worked on decoding very challenging words and read an article on the Hoover Dam to help us practice this skill. We worked with a partner to answer comprehension questions about this article as well.  We worked in teacher led groups on our chapter books, practicing fluency, comprehension and finding key details.

Writing: We revisited our informational writing genre and researched then wrote all about Jimmy Carter. We began with a title page, created a table of contents, then began our pages.

Math:  We worked with some challenging math addition and subtraction problems that contain the need for regrouping in the tens and ones place.  We also revisited missing addend three digit problems.

Social Studies:  We learned all about Jimmy Carter and his contributions to the civil rights movement.

Class News and Announcements...

Thank you to the Kales for watching Joe for us over the break!

Our class has been working really hard to memorize our math facts.  Our leaders are as follows; (addition) Mark Coaxum 35 seconds, (subtraction) David Donea and Sawyer Kale 50 seconds, (multiplication) Gawain Wyatt 59 seconds.   Way to go, students!

Everyone should be practicing their math facts at home! We've got a nice healthy competition brewing in our room!
