Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for visiting the blog this week. I hope everyone found the paragraphs below helpful! Remember, this type of writing is expected at all times! Check out below to find out what else we have been doing in our fabulous 2nd grade class this week...
Phonics: Learning increasingly difficult spelling patterns involving short and long e sounds.
Writing: We listened to and wrote several response to literature papers this week. I am doing much modeling, but the children will be expected to apply these skills independently as the nine weeks goes on. It is a great idea after reading a story to verbally ask your child to tell you what a great topic sentence would be if they were writing a response to literature. You can also ask your child to give you a quick summary of the story! This week, we also reviewed contractions as well as language connections (both are heavily covered on the CRCT). If you are unclear as to what language connections are...see the paper in your child's blue folder this week.
Reading: We are still working on identifying story elements, which really connects to our response to literature writing. We have been working on Judy Blume chapter books in guided reading this week.
Math: We have been reviewing simple subtraction strategies, double digit subtraction without regrouping, and subtraction involving regrouping. Remember, the assessment will be next Tuesday. Also, we practiced our +9 math facts this week. Next week will be +10, then we will move on to subtraction facts. You will notice that our Math Magician website does not go up to tens, so you'll need to get out those old fashioned flash cards if you notice that your child is having difficulty with those facts.
Science: We began our unit on Energy. We learned that the three forms of energy are heat, light and motion. We explored examples of each type of energy.
Class News and Reminders...
I have to add one more item to our "donations" list...we are in need of 50-100-150 watt three way bulbs. Thank you to everyone who sent in the items for our math stations games. We are all set in that department.
Bingo Night is tonight at Ford! Your bingo cards are free with a PTA membership card.
Academic Alerts will go home next week. If your child is in danger of not meeting standards in any area of the report card, I will be contacting you.
