September 2, 2011 Update...

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting today!  I am  so proud of the students' behavior this week!  We have really had an awesome week.  Good thing, because we are finished up with our kindergarten review and we are ready to jump into the first grade curriculum. It is fast paced and we have lots to learn, so continue to emphasize implementing those five rules to live by! Another thing you can be helping your child with at home is comprehension of the AR books that come home. We have gone over MANY times on how to select a book at your reading level (the kids all have stickers on their media sticks with appropriate levels) and they should also know that I'm expecting them to come in and take tests on these books. It is up to the students to tell me they are ready to test and then visit the library to get new books. Your child has the opportunity to go to the library every morning and every day during reading.  Also, we took our Superstar +1's test today.  I'm so proud of the scores!  I can tell some practice was going on at home!  As we move into the more challenging facts, memorization is the key. Children should not be counting on their fingers.Make sure to check the blue folders on fridays as that's when the test will come home.

Phonics/Grammar:  We reviewed the short o word family.  We talked about the importance of sounding out words OUT LOUD when we are working with difficult words or unfamiliar words.  We also reviewed the two sounds of each vowel and learned a fun song. We added many site words to our word wall and wrote sentences using these words.

Reading: This week, we continued our discussion of important components to include when retelling a story.  We read the books Knuffle Bunny and Teddy Bear and completed an organizer. We also compared these two stories and completed a Venn diagram.  We worked in small groups on fluency and learning strategies to help us decode unfamiliar words. We began our new chapter book, Ghostville Elementary. The kids are LOVING this book! Don't worry, it's not too scary!

Math:  We reviewed our basic subtraction facts and how to model subtraction stories through pictures.  We also made two charts to help us identify clue words found in word problems that indicate which operation to use.  We made a mini-stamp subtraction book and we played karate chop subtraction to show the subtraction from 10 facts.  I think the favorite was TEDDY BEAR BOWLING though!  Ask your child how it helped us learn about subtraction.

Writing: This week, we continued to discuss the writing process. We discussed how important it is to tell a story in order.  We also came up with ways to make our stories interesting to the reader.

Social Studies: We finished up our unit on our global address.  The kids now know their city, county, state, country, continent, and planet.

Class News and Reminders...

Congratulations to Frank Mintmire for earning the reward of taking Furball home this weekend!  Remember, everyone who can exhibit responsibility here at school will get a chance to take him home.  Students receiving zero strikes will have their name put in a hat for a drawing each Thursday.

Get a head start on math facts this weekend!  Some children need more time with +1 and some have moved on to +2.  Check out the memorization tips below for some ideas to help your child.

Thank you to Mrs. Bryd, Mrs. Huffstetler, and Mrs. Farrell for getting that snack sack back to us filled with goodies! The kids love seeing what they will be having each new day!

Challenge Activity presentations are due on Tuesday!  Make sure your child knows the material and can present the map on his/her own!
