Hi Parents,
Thank you for visiting the blog today. Below, you will find detailed information about our week. I can't wait to hear all about the historical figures your children researched! We will begin our presentations on Monday. We had a busy day today with our furry visitor, so we didn't get to the presentations yet! The kids LOVED getting to know Tug. Hopefully, he'll be able to come back for another visit soon.
Phonics: This week, we reviewed all four of our digraphs. We reviewed our lists from the previous weeks, we practiced sounding out and applying our phonics rules to words as we wrote on our whiteboards, and we played a smartboard sorting game. This week, we also learned about nouns and how to classify them. We created a list of nouns then went on a magazine search for nouns.
Reading: This week, we worked in groups to practice our reading fluency. We also reviewed first grade expectations when completing a reading response activity. We completed four different activities using our books. We also listened to several stories about seasons and completed a four square organizer to describe things that happen in each season. We are still reading our chapter book, The Kid In the Red Jacket. We are learning all about Howard Jeeter and his adventures as he begins his new life in a new town.
Writing: We focused heavily this week on editing paragraphs. We learned the editing marks used to correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling errors. We edited and rewrote several short paragraphs to show our knowledge of writing conventions, or how to make our writing LOOK good! Capitalization, punctuation and correctly spelled 1st grade words are standards that we are looking for mastery in. Please make sure you are emphasizing this expectation at home.
Math: We concluded our subtraction unit. We learned how to look at a subtraction rule and an input number to determine what the output will be (called MAGIC TUNNELS). We also learned how to used comparing as a strategy for subtraction. We took our unit test on Subtraction on Wednesday and I was so pleased with the scores. This class is so bright and, as a whole, they seem to really grasp concepts easily. We moved on to place value on Thursday. We worked with tens and ones manipulatives to model numbers. We learned that each digit in a number has a value and we can represent this many ways. We learned how to show numbers in standard form, written form, expanded form and using tens and ones.
Science: We learned about the Weather and the Seasons this week.We read in the children's science workbook all about weather and answered comprehension questions as we read. We also learned all about weather vocabulary words.
Class News...
Congratulations to Frank Mintmire for being chosen as our Teacher's Helper this week! What an excellent example he has been for all of us!
Thank you Mrs. Byrd and Mrs. Samiec for providing snack for the class for the past few weeks! We love all the goodies!
Remember to encourage your child to put in time studying those math facts during the week. Check out the "tips for memorizing" on the bottom of the blog for helpful ideas!
We will be sending home conference time letters the second week of October. If you know of days or times that absolutely will not work for you, please shoot me an email before then so I can make sure to accommodate your schedule.
Thank you to everyone who sent in magazines! We now have enough for our upcoming activities.
I have one more donation request...If you have small old toys, pencils, stickers, etc. that you'd like to get rid of, our treasure box is getting low! No need to go out and buy items. "one man's trash is another man's treasure" definitely applies to 6 year old boys and girls!
