Hello Parents,
We have had a very busy past two weeks! CogAT scores are in and I've broken down the subtest scores and put a report in your child's folder. There is lots of good information online if you are interested in what each subtest shows. Keep in mind, this is an abilities (intelligence) test, not an achievement test. This week and next week, we are also completing many end of quarter assessments to show what we have learned! Check out below to find out what else we have learned the past two weeks...
Phonics/Grammar: We have learned about the -mp, -nd, -nt, qu, t, and w sounds. We worked on identifying words with these patterns in poems, we practiced sorting these words into categories, and we wrote these words on white boards. We also have learned how to read and write contractions.
Reading: We read the stories The Gingerbread Man and The Runaway Tortilla and compared and contrasted them using a Venn diagram. We also used these stories to identify character, setting, problem and solution, as well as main idea. We worked in small groups to practice our reading fluency. We worked one-on-one with Mrs. W to show our reading progress!
Math: We completed our unit on addition and subtraction strategies to 18. We learned how to determine a missing addend in an addition problem and we continued our practice of three number addition. We also focused on money, counting collections of coins to 99 cents and collections of bills to 20 dollars. Those who did not pass this assessment will be retested next Friday. We just began our unit on geometry, focusing on characteristics of three dimensional shapes.
Social Studies: We completed our unit on Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea, learning about their explorations to the west. This week, we began our study of landforms comparing and contrasting deserts, mountains, plains, plateaus, and valleys.
Classroom News and Announcements...
Thank you Mrs. McAlister and Mrs. Vansant for helping us with AR this week! Thank you Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Abrams for helping us last week!
Don't forget to send in a wrapped chapter book for our book exchange! Make sure to put "FROM...." on the gift. We will keep these books under our classroom christmas tree until our activity. Keep in mind that these books need to be "gender friendly"!
First grade will be selling hot chocolate and donuts next Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for caring coins!
Our class has run out or disinfecting wipes...horrible timing considering what's been going around the school (strep, stomach virus)! I would like for each student to bring in an additional container of disinfecting wipes. Thank you for helping us keep our classroom clean and germ-free!
