December 14, 2012 Update...

Dear Parents,

Only 11 days until Christmas...and are we all excited here in Room 216! Thank the heavens for our stocking stuffers!  I appreciate all of your donations.  The kids are loving this special treat each day as well.  Wrapped chapter books were due today...if you have forgotten, please send the book on Monday!  Also, I will be preparing the gingerbread houses for the kids to decorate at our holiday party on Wednesday afternoon at 2:20. If you can help, come join me!  Bring a hot glue gun  if you have one!  Our holiday party is on Thursday at 12:30. All are welcome to join in the fun!

Check out below to see what we've been doing all week...

Phonics/Grammar:  We've been reviewing all of our spelling words for this quarter to prepare for our test next week.  We also have been reviewing the correct way to combine ideas into one sentence, looking at special punctuation situations (when combining sentences and creating lists), and studying words that modify nouns and verbs.

Reading:  We completed our chapter book read aloud, Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.   We specifically focused on fluency and decoding unfamiliar words by using context clues.  We read the book Night Tree by Eve Bunting and retold the main idea and details. We created a Venn diagram comparing our tree to the tree in the story.  We also read a story called Old Tom and the Rogue and looked carefully at several unfamiliar words and phrases. We used context clues in the passage to figure out the meaning.

Writing:  We completed our independent research papers on our animals.

Math:  We learned special strategies for solving missing addend computation problems. We also reviewed place value in preparation for our benchmark assessment in math, which we took this week.  We took a computation assessment, showing we have learned all the important strategies to help us solve challenging adding, subtracting and even multiplication problems!

Science: We completed our unit on Energy and took an open book test, showing we can use grade level resources to find important information.

Class News...
Remember, not all children run a fever with the flu!  If your child is exhibiting symptoms of the flu, please keep your child at home. We've had six confirmed cases in just a week and a half!  I'm doing all I can here to kill the germs, but the best way to keep these nasty germs from spreading is to keep sick kids at home until they are completely well.

Winter Break begins on Friday, December 21st.   I'll see all my sweet children back here on Tuesday, January 8th.  Report cards will go home that week as well. I'll be letting you know individually if I am requesting a conference.
