September 20, 2013 Update...

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you've had a wonderful week. Here's what we've been doing in Room 216...

English/Lang. Arts:  We worked on our new sound/spelling patterns (short/long o and short and long e with double consonants).  We learned five new bonus words that we should be reading and writing correctly.

Reading:  We began a new chapter book called Stone Fox.  We learned that the beginning of the story introduces us to the characters and describes the setting.  We also learned how to answer comprehension questions in complete sentences.  We read the book Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon and talked about the central message of the story and the character traits displayed by the main characters.

Writing:  We began looking at conventions when writing.  We discussed capitalization rules and punctuation rules and edited paragraphs using proofreading symbols.  We then rewrote the paragraphs correctly.

Math: We began our unit on addition and subtraction.  We learned two strategies to help us compute correctly; drawing base ten blocks and using expanded form.  We worked with partners and independently to practice these new strategies.  We also talked about ways to fluently (quickly and accurately) solve problems mentally.  We completed our first POD (problem of the day) to show several strategies for solving one problem.

Social Studies: We learned about the Cherokee towns, gardens, homes, and lifestyles.  We read a big book about Sequoyah and learned the important contributions he made for his people.  We learned about the Cherokee symbols that were used in writing and then we created our own short stories, incorporating these symbols.

Class News and Announcements...

Thank you for remembering your flowers for Mrs. Kale on Thursday!  She loved them!

Congratulations to Mikel Witherspoon for being chosen as our CELEBRITY this week!

Thank you to Mrs. Newlin and Mrs. Barfield for helping out in the classroom this week!

Please remember to sign and return the permission slip for our in-house field trip coming up in October. Also send your donation!

Your child can listen or read books on Bookflix from home.  There is a link on Mrs. Huffstetler's blog.  Then your child can take an AR test from home on that same book.  Remember, every child is expected to take and PASS 10 tests before the end of the nine weeks. This is a very manageable goal that I expect everyone to achieve.  There will be an AR celebration in October for all those meeting this goal.

The OSCARS chart is filling up with stars! Make sure you are encouraging your child to choose items that are challenging and interesting to them!
