March 14, 2014 Update...

Hi Parents,

First off, Mrs. Capes and I are on an emotional high right now after completing this nine week's round of testing!  These children have absolutely blown us away with their progress in reading, writing and math.  It is so rewarding to see the amazing results of the kids' hard work and effort.  On that note, you will be getting your child's nine week progress report on Wednesday. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like to meet to discuss our last quarter of school.  Check out below to see the list of students who met their AR goal for reading this quarter.  Remember, your child does not have to search out books that are specifically AR. With the program being updated recently, just about every book should have a test. So many kids are reading chapter books now, which is a great way to earn those points. Their real responsibility is to remember to take the tests either in class or at home.  New goals were set today, so it's time to make a plan on how that goal can be met.  This is what other cool things we've been doing in class this week...

Phonics/Grammar:  We studied the r-influenced spelling patterns (-ar, -or, and -er) as well as the short and long i spelling patterns (i, igh, and i_e).  We also discussed segmenting two syllable words to decode more challenging words more accurately in reading and writing. We worked on white boards to practice segmenting and writing.

Reading:  We finished our chapter book, Ribsy.  We also worked in small groups on fluency and accuracy. Some groups began their second round of book club on Clementine: Friend of the Week, Help! I'm a Prisoner in the Library, or Lemonade Crime.  The children chose their book based on interest level.

Writing:  We SHOWED what we've learned about OPINION writing by independently completing a book recommendation.

Math:  We worked on math fluency with facts this week.  We also reviewed using our place value knowledge to compare larger numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols.  We reviewed the many types of word problems (multi-step, multiple addend, and missing addend) and took an end of quarter assessment (in folders today).

Science:  We began studying the moon and how its shape changes based on the position of the earth.

Class New and Announcements...

Congratulations to Anne-Kathryn for being chosen as our Celebrity this week!!!  Woohoo!!

Congratulations to the following students for meeting their AR goal (points met and and 85% or higher average for comprehension):
Landon, Lilleigh, Merritt, Reagan, Samantha, Mark, Kayla, David, Jacob, Sophia, Caroline, Jordan, and Gawain

Make sure your child is devoting time to math fact fluency if this is an area of weakness for him or her. There's a great math facts page listed below in the Web Site section.

Book Fair is currently going on!  There are some great chapter books out right now. I'd encourage you to load up for the summer!
