Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for visiting this week! We have had such a fun week. On Wednesday, we enjoyed the rewards of our first marble party. We made homemade donuts in our classroom! The kids are already busy working on filling the jar again! We also watched The Legend of Sleepy Hollow so we understand the performing arts presentation on Monday. We'll be leaving the school around 10:45 for the performance and we'll return sometime shortly after 1:00. We will be eating sack lunches in our room before we leave for the trip. Also, remember to continue collecting pledge money for our boosterthon fun run! We are up to $8 per lap! Remember, all of the money collected goes directly to fund programs at our school for our kids!
Check out below to find out what we've been doing in class this week...
Phonics: We reviewed the long and short o sounds that contain the CVC, CVCe, and CVVC spelling patterns.
Reading: In Reading, we are enjoying our new chapter book, "Totally Disgusting" by Bill Wallace. This is an AR book, so the kids will have the opportunity to earn points after we've completed the book. We also worked on a big book entitled "His Majesty, The King" and we learned about identifying important story elements and using our inferencing skills to help us with this. We worked in small guided reading groups on specific skills as well. Some children are working on the book "Freckle Juice" and some are working on "Only An Octopus".
Writing: We have written several "Response to Literature" stories this week. The children are learning how to quickly use an organizer to get their thoughts down on paper, then move on to writing their rough drafts. We also are working through the editing and revising process together. The children should be at a point in their writing where they can easily stay on a topic and write at least 7-10 descriptive sentences. Please provide opportunities at home for your child to write. Every 2nd grader should have a "journal" for creative writing.
Math: We began our unit on telling time this week. We have learned how to tell time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. In addition to telling time, and writing time, the children need to be able to identify the various ways of stating the time. For example, 2:15 can be read as quarter past 2, fifteen minutes after 2, or 45 minutes to 3. This is a skill that needs to be practiced at home for the children to be successful. Please encourage your child to look at clocks and tell the time in various ways!
Social Studies: We are continuing our study of the influential people in Georgia's early history and their part in starting the first colony in Georgia, which was Savannah. These people are Sequoyah, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and James Oglethorpe. Can your child tell you who these people are and what historical contributions they made?
