October 30, 2009 Update...

We had such a fun week! We enjoyed our field trip on Monday to see The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. We had a blast on Thursday, participating in our Fun Run. We also had fun while learning during our fabulous Fall centers today! Make sure you visit the section below to find out the specifics on what we are learning in each subject area. Also, be sure to check out your child's blue folder today for AR updates. I've printed a report for each child. I am so proud of the great progress the children are making this nine weeks! Remember, your child has a point goal as well as the grade level goal of averaging 85% comprehension for the nine weeks. Keep up the good work!

Phonics: We learned the spelling patterns of the short and long u vowel sounds. We also took an assessment on the past three weeks of phonics content. You will find your child's assessment in the blue folder.

Writing: We continue to learn about responding to literature through writing. At this point in the year, the children should be comfortable with the components of writing a paragraph. I see that some children are still having trouble with the Dolch words (a list was sent out at the beginning of the year). If your child is still having trouble with these "no excuse" words, then some extra spelling practice may be in order. This week, we read the story "Where the Wild Things Are" and used an organizer to plan our writing. We then wrote a paragraph independently. Check out the blue folder to see your child's progress. We also learned all about the 4 types of sentences and the corresponding punctuation (declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory).

Math: We continued our study of time to the five minutes. The children took the final assessment today. Next week, we will begin double digit subtraction, with and without regrouping. Also, we practiced our +6, +7, and +8 addition facts. If your child received a "1", he/she will be given the assessment again next Friday. Please practice with your child if you see this is a concern. The website located at the bottom of this blog is a great place to start!

Reading: We are halfway through our chapter book, Totally Disgusting by Bill Wallace. We are working on identifying the main idea in short passages as well as pointing out the story elements (setting, characters, problem, solution).

Class News and Reminders...

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Sharpe, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Conrad, Mrs. Wollaston, and Mrs. Glass for helping out with our special centers today. Mrs. Glass did a phenomenal job organizing this for our class!

All Fun Run money is due no later than Thursday, November 4th! You will find a blue collection envelope in your child's blue folder today. Our class alone raised over $1000! Way to go, Wadsworth Warriors!

Remember, there will be no school on Tuesday, November 3rd.
