Below, you will find two examples of 2nd grade appropriate paragraphs. These are the two writing genres we have covered so far this year. Please give your child many opportunities to practice this writing...
Example #1 (Personal Narrative...This type of writing is expected whenever your child is writing in a journal or telling about an experience he/she has had.)
My Exciting Saturday
By: Maggie Wadsworth
It all started on Saturday morning when my mom, my sister and I were in the car going to get my hair cut. First, my mother said to my sister and I, "Do you girls want to go and visit the kittens we saw at the animal shelter earlier this week?" Of course we said yes! Then, we arrived at the animal shelter and went into the kitten room. Our favorite kittens were still there! Next, we took out the kittens and let them play on the floor of the room. In the end, our mom said, "Okay! Let's take them home!" We had such an exciting Saturday morning. I love our new kittens!
Expectations: Topic sentence should include who was with you, where you were, and when the story took place. The following sentences should tell a story in sequential order using transition words. The story should end with an appropriate closing sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph.
Example #2 (Response to Literature...This type of paragraph is expected whenever the student is asked to write a summary of any kind in regards to a story that was read.)
Where the Wild Things Are
By: Jerry Smith
The story, Where the Wild Things Are, is about a little boy named Max who goes on an adventure in his dreams. It all started when Max puts on a wolf suit, gets into trouble with his mother, and is sent to his room with no supper. Next, Max travels to a place where monsters cause all kinds of trouble for him. In the end, Max makes it back to his room, where he wakes up to find his supper waiting for him. I loved this story because it was very funny. It was funny when the monsters that Max visited did the same things to Max that Max did to his mother!
Expectations: Topic sentence needs to include the title of the story, the main character, and the main idea of the story. The following sentences need to include the most important details from the beginning, middle and ending of the story. Transition words are to be used in this part of the paragraph. The closing of the paragraph should include the writer's opinion of the story with a specific detail from the story to support his/her opinion.
All of these expectations are county wide and the rubrics used for grading writing can be found on Picasso under the 2nd grade Language Arts area.
