Hello Parents and Students,
Well, two out of the three sections of the CRCT are complete as of today! We will finish up with the math section tomorrow. I am very proud of the children's focus and hard work over the past few days. I'm excited to get our results.
This week, we mainly reviewed for the CRCT. We are all ready to be back on track next week, getting back to our usual routine. In math, we will get back to our division unit. The children will learn several strategies for dividing sets such as repeated subtraction, using a number line, and dividing into sets. The children will also be responsible for identifying key words that indicate the operation of division is required to solve a word problem. I am postponing the x4 multiplication facts quiz until next Friday. I know this week has been a difficult week to sufficiently learn this. In writing, we will continue with our persuasive writing genre. The children will learn how to fully develop a paragraph to persuade the reader that his/her opinion is correct on a specified topic. We chose our new chapter book, Kenny and the Dragon. We have completed several comprehension activities related to this story. The children are also independently working on their own chapter books and contracts, as well as working in small guided groups with me on certain reading skills and strategies. In science, we will begin discussing the life cycle of the butterfly, as well as other insects and animals. We are getting butterfly larvae and will witness this cycle first hand in our classroom.
Class News and Reminders...
Our school dance is this Saturday at Lost Mountain Middle School from 6:30 to 8:00! Join your friends for a good time, great snacks, and some rockin' music!
"Evening in the Garden" is Monday, May 3th. Your child will be working on writing a Haiku poem. He/she will have the opportunity to share this creation at our "Poetry Reading" in the outdoor classroom that evening. More information will be coming soon!
Field Day is May 11th. Our class will need two parent volunteers to "play" with us that day, as well as provide cool drinks and spray bottles for misting the kids off if it is hot outside. Please email me if you are available for all or part of this day.
Please look for overdue library books at home. All the media center books will be due back here by the first week in May.
Encourage your child to visit the First in Math website. Our class is in 3rd place for our entire school! I've told them if we move up to 1st place, we'll eat outside at the picnic tables!
Our secret "agenda" phrase for this week is "CRCT". Write this in your child's agenda by MONDAY morning and your child will win a trip to the candy basket!
