April 22, 2010 Update...

Hello Parents and Students,

Thank you for coming to our blog to get the latest news and information! Be on the lookout Monday for a special homework assignment. The students will be asked to research a plant or animal, create the life cycle diagram, and write a paragraph. All the materials and information will be coming home on Monday! We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of our Painted Lady Butterflies, which should be emerging from their crysalides sometime next week! Check out below to see what other things have been going on in our fabulous 2nd grade room...

Phonics: This week, we reviewed the au/aw, ow, ou sounds and we learned words that contain the spelling patterns gn, kn, and wr. We worked on white boards to show our sounding out and segmenting skills. We also completed several activities in our Words Their Way Notebook.

Reading: We are enjoying our chapter book, Kenny and the Dragon. We made a flip book, identifying the characters, setting, and plot. We talked about the events leading up to the most suspenseful part of the story (climax) and how to incorporate this into our own writing. We also worked in small groups on books, focusing on such skills as inferencing and identifying cause/effect. On Thursday, we visited the computer lab and took the final SRI assessment. This assessment shows your child's reading comprehension ability. Please pay close attention to the score. I will be attaching the 2nd grade expectations for you as well.

Writing: We are hard at work, refining how we write a persuasive paragraph. This week, we worked on choosing our favorite season and then writing a persuasive piece. First, we brainstormed some ideas for each season. Then, I modeled using an organizer for my thoughts. After that, we wrote our paragraphs. For this writing session, the children were given a "rubric" to check for all the necessary components. The children edited their papers independently. You will find your child's work and grade in the blue folder this week.

Math: We are learning various ways to divide. We applied our division skills to solve word problems and we also learned how to use a number line and skip counting to divide, how to use repeated subtraction to divide, and how to draw sets to divide. In addition, we took our Math Assessement for the material we have learned so far in this nine week period. The results will help me differentiate my instruction for the rest of the school year.

Science: With the arrival of our caterpillars, we began studying the life cycle of the butterfly. We have observed our butterflies in the larva stage (caterpillars), then changing into the pupa stage and making chrysalides. We have journals that we are recording our observations in.

Class News and Notes...

Moms, save the date of May 13th at 8:00! We have a special class event that we would like ALL mothers to be a part of. This activity will not last more than 30-45 minutes. If you are unable to attend, please arrange for someone to be there for your child or let me know so we can make sure a special person from school is here for your child. More information will be coming home next week!

Third Grade Summer Sessions: This summer, I will be hosting "bridge" activities at my home for the children in our class only. These sessions are meant to help your child retain all of the skills we have covered this year, as well as introduce the children to third grade concepts to give them an advantage at the start of third grade and "bridge" the gap that often happens when children are out for summer. There will be a calendar with the dates, times, and other important information in your child's blue folder today.

Field Day: You will see a volunteer opportunity for field day in your child's blue folder. If you sign up on that sheet, you will be in charge of a "station" for that day, which is organized by the PE department. I am still in need of two volunteers to help out our class on that day as well. Please email me if you can donate your time.

Evening in the Garden: Your child has been working on a special kind of poetry called a 'haiku' which he/she will have the opportunity to share during Evening in the Garden. If your child wishes to participate, there will be a designated area and time for these poetry readings. More information will be coming next week.

Thank you for taking time to note all of this important information this week! Please write "homework pass" in your child's agenda BEFORE Tuesday of next week and your child will receive one! Hope this helps out with all the spring time sports and extra activities that I know the kids are participating in!
