Hello Parents and Students,
Thank you for visiting today. I can't believe we only have 15 days of school left! This year has just flown by. The days we have left in 2nd grade are winding down, but we are not! Check out below to see what we've been working on this week...
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned the spr, str, and scr blend. We used our knowledge to apply these sounds to our writing. We also reviewed the ou/ow and the au/aw sound, as these spelling patterns are commonly confused when writing. In grammar, we worked in small groups playing a game to identify the part of speech of words, focusing on nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Writing: We continue to work in the writing genre of persuasive writing. We completed a paragraph this week and moved on to the editing process. We are focusing on adding rich vocabulary and more descriptive words when we write. We also worked on another Haiku, which helped us focus on describing words and segmenting words into syllables.
Reading: This week, I assessed the children using our Developmental Reading Assessment. This assessment, which is the one that I shared with you at conferences in January, indicates your child's oral reading fluency and comprehension level. This is just one assessment that is used to determine your child's overall reading level. We are still reading our chapter book, Kenny and the Dragon.
Math: We completed our division unit and are now working in small groups on extending or remediating concepts based on the end of the nine week benchmark exam. We will continue to do this for the next two weeks, then we will retake the exam. The concepts we are working on are number representation to the thousands, elapsed time, multiplication, division, and adding and subtracting three digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Science: All six of our butterflies emerged out of their chrysalises this week! The children have observed the butterflies, recording their findings in a journal. We watched two short video clips on the life cycle of the frog and the life cycle of the monarch butterfly.
Social Studies: This week, we learned about the government leaders (local, state and national). We also spotlighted Jimmy Carter and his humanitarian efforts. The children read a book and used the book as a resource to answer questions about Jimmy Carter.
Important Classroom News...
Thank you to those of you who have volunteered to work with the PE department on field day! I still am in need of a volunteer to help me on that day. If you are available, please email me. I need someone to bring water for the children and help with things like bathroom breaks.
Remember to return the RSVP for our special "mom" event! If you or someone else is unable to attend, I will try my best to find someone here at the school to be here for your child.
Evening in the Garden has been moved to Thursday due to the bad weather heading our way next week. Remember, your child will have an opportunity to share their poetry during a reading. The time and place is still undetermined. Be on the lookout for an email regarding this info. Remember, this is a "garden party"! I bought my fancy hat this weekend!
All library books need to be returned by Friday, May 7th. I will continue to have AR books in the room, but please really encourage reading this week. The children should be coming home with library books every night, then taking AR tests first thing in the morning with me. Many children have met their year long 75 point AR goal and will be receiving invitations to JumpIts for the pizza party! We will also be having a celebration for all of the students who met their nine week AR goals.
Life Cycle projects are due Monday! Please encourage your child to include lots of detail in the life cycle circle diagram. Their illustrations are just as important as the paragraph in conveying that they understand the life cycle.
