Hello Parents and Students,
We have had such a busy week! Wasn't Evening in the Garden fantastic? The children worked so hard on the performance. It was also so heartwarming to see how much of a community our school actually is. We had our head custodian and his sons in the band, our cafe manager singing, and another custodian DJing! I just think we are so lucky to be here at Ford. I also want to thank you for making Teacher Appreciation Week so special. I love the flowers, the cards warmed my heart, and I have enough chocolate to get me through the end of the year...okay, who are we kidding? You know how much I love chocolate, it should last me through the weekend!
Check out below to see what else we've been doing this week. I hope to see many of you at field day on Tuesday or at our special event for all the moms on Thursday at 8:00 am.
Phonics: This week, we reviewed lessons 30-34 and took an assessment on the phonics spelling patterns. We also learned three letter -r controlled blends and the squ- blend. Remember, our spelling program is designed to teach patterns, not simply the memorization of words. This is very different from the way you and I learned to spell, but research shows that this way of teaching spelling improves writing and reading compared to the traditional way of spelling.
Reading: We read several stories on various life cycles and answered comprehension questions. We reviewed strategies for locating information to answer our questions, such as looking for common key words and phrases in the questions/text. We also read the book, Plants, in small groups and practiced these strategies. We worked independently on our chapter books and contracts. The children are working hard on earning their 75 points to make it to the JumpIts party next week. I will send invitations to those children who met this yearly goal. Be on the lookout in the blue folder today.
Math: We reviewed a few more challenging concepts from the year this week. These concepts included three-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, telling time to the five minute increment, and making change with money. This review and subsequent assessments have helped me determine whether your child has retained the concepts over the course of the year. These assessments can be found in your child's blue folder and can provide you with great information to work with your child on over the summer.
Writing: The children worked on some special projects that all the moms will be enjoying next week! We also began working on taking our one paragraph personal narratives to multiple paragraph papers in preparation for third grade. These next few weeks, we will focus on previewing the third grade curriculum.
Science: We released our butterflies on Tuesday. We also discussed the importance of the circle diagram when showing life cycles and the meaning of this. Everyone did a fabulous job on their life cycle at home projects and you will find your child's grade in the blue folder as well. I've tried to include some glows (what I loved about the project) as well as some grows (how the project could be improved) on each grade sheet. Please discuss these notes with your child!
Classroom News ...
