Hello Parents,
Thank you for taking time out of your day to find out about what's been going on in Room 205! We've had a busy week and we've completed many of our preassessments. We are ready to jump into our curriculum and get moving...Check out below to find out what we've studied this week. Pay special attention to the "Conversation Starters" section located below to get your children talking more about specifics in the classroom. I hope you find this new section a helpful communication tool between you and your child.
Phonics: We studied the ch/sh digraph in the beginning, middle and ending of words. We continued segmenting words to help us move to more conventional spelling when we write. We also reviewed the long/short o spelling patterns and worked together on a smartboard activity.
Reading: We finished our chapter book, Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. We talked about story elements and sequencing a story when retelling.
We completed an organizer showing our knowledge of these elements. We began our new chapter book, The Magic Tree House:Dinosaurs Before Dark. We are working through the Cobb County High Frequency Word List to improve our reading as well as our writing.
Writing: This week, we began working on our brainstorming techniques. We discussed the importance of writing about "small moments" in time. I am encouraging the students to narrow their topic instead of trying to write about a longer segment of time. Writing about a "small moment", but including rich and vivid detail is our end goal. I continue to emphasize correct conventions when writing (capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and complete thoughts).
Math: We began our unit on addition strategies. We are focusing on using illustrations to help us add. We played games using two-color counters as well as dice to practice this skill. We also discussed fact families. We continue to review all the ways to represent numbers during our calendar time (expanded form, written form, base ten blocks, and place value).
Health: We learned about the importance of eating a balanced and healthy diet. We learned how to categorize foods into food groups.
Conversation Starters (use these prompts to talk with your child about our school day!)
*Ask your child why Junie B. Jones thought she should call 911 from the clinic at school.
*Ask your child what the word "genre" means.
*Can your child remember his/her book buddy's name? What activity did they do to get to know each other?
*Ask your child what the "mama" in the ones house does to her babies when she gets to ten??? (Response should be she bundles them all together and sends them over to the tens house...)
Class News and Reminders...
Please remember to sign and return the red weekly behavior report every Monday.
We visited the Media Center on Thursday. Your child is allowed to check out two books at a time. Please help your child be responsible with these library books and return them as soon as he/she is finished with the books. The children will have several opportunities every day to visit the Media Center. I will discuss AR books and points at our Open House meeting in September.
Be on the lookout for the Snack Sack! We began our rotation last Friday and Mrs. Garner did an excellent job providing a healthy and nutritious snack for the kids all week long! Thank you, Mrs. Garner.
Remember to keep Arturo in your prayers! He had his tonsils taken out Thursday morning. We look forward to him returning next week.
