August 27th Update...

Hello Parents,

Thanks for visiting today!  We've had such a productive week...we began guided reading groups and our small group rotation as well as guided math groups.  Check out the conversation starters section to prompt your child to talk about his/her day.  The book fair has come to Kemp!  If you are interested in donating a book to our class library, there are a few suggestions on the Wish List board in the Media Center.  Don't forget to mark your calendar for next Thursday...I look forward to seeing everyone at Open House!

Phonics:  This week, we learned the wh and th digraph.  We read a poem, hunting for words containing the digraphs, and used wiki sticks to circle them.  We also identified rhyming words in the poem.

Reading:  We finished our Magic Tree House chapter book this week.  We discussed the literary elements in this story.  We also read the book, The Napping House, and used props to help us retell the story in sequential order.  In small groups, we worked on leveled books to challenge our vocabulary knowledge. We also learned several strategies for decoding challenging words. We began a literary elements mini-book with our book buddies.  We completed the chapter book, Henry and Mudge: The First Book and completed and independent reading contract on this story.

Math:  We completed our math unit on single digit addition.  We learned several strategies for solving addition problems.  We also discussed fact families and how addition problems are related to subtraction problems, then completed a fact family house.  On our calendar wall, we continue to learn about number patterns, time, and money.  We worked in small guided groups on problem solving strategies, ordering numbers to 30, and number representation (written form, standard form, and illustration).  We also practiced the commutative property of addition with our domino game and a partner!  Remember to continue practicing those math facts.  If your child had trouble with +1 and +2, continue to work on this at home.  We have two weeks to master +3 facts.  The kids are all handling this challenge beautifully

Social Studies:  We began our Maps and Globes unit.  We played a game called Land or Water, read a book about maps, and completed a Venn diagram to compare maps and globes.  We will continue with this study next week.

Conversation Starters...
*Ask your child who Jack and Annie are and what was magical about the tree house they went in.
*Ask your child to explain a fact family to you...Give them the fact family 6,2,8 and see if they can tell you the four facts that make up this family.
*Can your child tell you their book buddy's name?
*Ask your child what has been their favorite book series so far...Magic Tree House, A to Z Mysteries, or Junie B. Jones?  Why?
*Can your child tell you why the character, Henry, was so sad in the story  we read? Hint:  It has to do with his dog Mudge.

Classroom News and Reminders...

The Book Fair opens tomorrow!  Our class will be previewing the books and making wish lists on Friday morning.  I hope many of you can make it to the family fun night on Tuesday, August 31st.  Your child may dress up as their favorite super hero. There will be lots of fun and prizes!

This week was Bully Prevention Week.  Please let your child wear blue tomorrow in support of preventing bullying in our school and our community.

See you on Thursday evening at 6:30 for Open House.  This will be a parent-only night filled with lots of good information.  After the presentation, I'll turn on the Smartboard for those of you who'd like to see this wonderful piece of educational technology in action.
