September 3, 2010 Update

Hello Parents,

Thank you for visiting today!  I enjoyed meeting with all of you last night at Open House. I hope you found the information useful.  Please check out below to see what we've been learning all week.

Phonics:  We reviewed all four digraphs from the past two weeks, practiced sorting picture cards, and writing words with this digraph.  We also continue to isolate long vowel sounds in words and study their spelling patterns.

Writing:  We continue to explore the personal narrative genre as well as adding rich details to our writing.  We wrote stories about our classroom math monster this week.  We talked about what makes a complete sentence.  We also met individually with Mrs. W to conference about how we can make our writing better.

Math:  We worked on learning several strategies for subtraction.  We began by using pictures to help us, then we moved on to counting up from the smaller number.  We got together in small groups to work on solving word problems.  We first locate the information (numbers) and then we identify the clue words that tell us the operation to use.  After that, we formulate the problem and choose our strategy for solving.  We continued our study of arrow math to sharpen our mental math skills during calendar time.  In independent groups, we practiced addition, subtraction, and fact families by playing fun games.

Reading:  We read several short stories and used props to help us retell the story in sequential order.  We listened to Ira Sleeps Over and then we put sentence strips in order to retell the story as an assessment.  We also worked in small groups on leveled books and discussed ways to decode unfamiliar words (looking at pictures, getting our mouths ready to make the first sound, looking for parts of the word we may know).  We worked independently on a reading contract to practice a variety of reading and writing skills.  At the end of the week, we all took AR tests on our "tub" book.

Social Sciences:  We compared maps and globes, completing a Venn diagram to help us understand the similarities and differences.  We also began a "My Global Address" book, identifying our continent, country, state and city.

Conversation Starters:

*Ask your child who Frank Pearl is and what he has a reputation of doing.
*Ask your child if they prefer to draw pictures or count up to solve subtraction problems.
*Ask your child the name of Ira's teddy bear in the story Ira Sleeps Over.
*Ask your child how many stars they have on the Reading Rockers poster for getting 100% on AR tests!

Classroom News and Reminders...

Thank you so much for the book donations this week!  Our classroom library has grown and I can tell you the kids are so excited to jump into these new books.  I really appreciate your donations.

Remember, no school on Monday!  Enjoy your long weekend.

Asa Garcia was our very first Teacher's Helper this week.  Congratulations to Asa for exhibiting our five Rules To Live By and being an excellent role model for his peers.  Way to go, Asa! (Asa gets extra bonus points this week...He came to school and told me I looked like Heather Locklear!!!  Of course, we paraded the halls and I made him repeat that to everyone we saw!)

The flu and virus season is officially upon us.  Please remember the Cobb County policy on student illnesses.  Your child must be fever free for a full 24 hours without the aid of a fever reducer before returning to school.  Your child may not return to school for a full 24 hours after the last incidence of vomiting or diarhea.  Hopefully if we all follow these guidelines, we can keep the germs to a minimum in our room.

Your child brought home a subtraction test in his/her blue folder today. Please sign and return this along with the red behavior sheet and the Performing Arts permission slip and donation.
