November 12, 2010 Update...

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting our blog today.  We have been so busy this week. Please read below to find out what we've been doing this week in class.  Also, check out below for information on our class Thanksgiving feast.  It is optional, but I would LOVE for all the children to participate if you have the time to help them.  Look for a flyer in today's blue folder as well.

Phonics/Grammar:  This week, we moved our focus from short vowels to long vowels.  We learned about the job of the "bossy e" and how important this one silent letter is.  We also learned several new games to review our past spelling patterns and lists of words.

Reading:  This week, we read and compared two nonfiction stories.  We learned all about important text features that help us determine whether a book is nonfiction or not (table of contents, photographs, glossary, index, bold words, etc.).  We also took a comprehension quiz on our chapter book, Ribsy.

Math:  We learned how to use our four-square method to help us solve word problems involving mulitplication (or repeated addition).  We worked in a small teacher led group to solve this type of problem.  We also practiced maintaining our skills of subtraction, comparing two-digit numbers using the greater than and less than signs, and solving simple addition and subtraction word problems.

Social Studies:  We learned all about the contributions of Thomas Jefferson.  We created a timeline of important events in his life.  We also create a K-W-L chart on what we currently know, want to know, and have learned about him.  We wrote wonderful biography stories about Thomas Jefferson, which are hanging in our hallway.

Classroom News and Announcements...

Congratulations to Parker DeFreece for being chosen as our Teacher's Helper this week!  Way to go, Parker for your hard work!

Thank you to Mrs. Kho-Han for helping us with AR this week!

Our grade level Thanksgiving Feast will be on Tuesday at 11:00.  Tickets may be purchased beginning at 10:50.  If you want to attend with your child but have not turned in the form, you may still do so.  Please wait for us in the main hallway if you plan to attend that day.

Our class will also be having a special Thanksgiving Feast on Friday at 10:30-11:30. This will be an optional activity.  I would love for all to participate, but I do understand how busy the evenings can be.  Please refer to the flyer coming home today for additional details.
