November 6th Update...

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting today.  We had a great week that ended with a fun movie day!  I think the kids really enjoyed the movie and we had a good discussion comparing the book to the movie. Please check out below to find out what we've been working on this week. Also remember to read the class news for more important information about our class...

Phonics/Grammar:  We reviewed short vowel spelling patterns beginning with consonant blends from previous lessons.  We will move on to simple long vowel patterns next week. Please remember to begin emphasizing correct spelling of short and long vowel patterns when your child is writing, as this will be expected from this point on.  We also reviewed the job of the noun and the verb in a sentence and made books using pictures from magazines and writing sentences focusing on these two parts of speech.

Reading:  We finished our chapter book Because of Winn Dixie and began our new chapter book, Ribsy by Beverly Cleary.  We also worked on particular reading strategies that can improve our fluency.  We learned to use the pictures to "predict" challenging vocabulary.  We worked in small groups on skill such as identifying cause/effect, making predictions, and inferring.

Math:  We completed chapter nine on number sense (comparing numbers, skip counting, and using a number line to identify 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less).  We also began addition with three digits.  We focused heavily on using the four-square method to help us solve word problems and we looked closely at clue words to determine the correct operation.

Social Studies:  We learned all about the 6 landforms on earth (desert, mountain, plains, plateau, coast, and valley) and we made a riddle book to help us remember the characteristics of each.  We worked with our book buddies to tell about each landform as a post assessment. We also listened to a speaker from Wellstar who taught us all about poisons and what we can do to protect ourselves from danger.

Class News and Reminders...

Thank you to Mrs. Petty and Mr. Sullivan for their help with AR!  The kids get so excited about this special time with parent volunteers.

Thank you to Mrs. Jouanet, who gave our class the fabulous tickets to the Georgia Aquarium!

We have exciting news to share this week...Jackson Davis and his family welcomed a new little baby boy to their family!  His name is Rhett and we hear from Jackson he is soooo cute!  Keep Jackson and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this special time!
