October 31st Update...

Hello Parents,

Thank you for visiting today.  I hope everyone had a wonderful time trick-or-treating...we sure had a great time at our special centers on Friday!  We are all about working hard and not wasting a minute that we have, but it was so great to see the kids having such a good time. We even managed to work those math facts into our fun with the awesome math fact spiders!  I want to thank Mrs. Tovar, Mrs. Taylor, Mr. Mizerek, Mr. Sullivan, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Kwan, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Gohlke, Blake's Grandma, Mrs. Garcia, and Mrs. Henry for volunteering their time to come in and help on Friday.  I want to also thank everyone who donated items for the centers.  Be sure to check out our class news section for more announcements and read below to find out what we've been working on this week in class.

Phonics/Grammar:  We practiced the sounds made by the letter combinations of wh, qu, tw, as well as k.  Please take note of your child's score on the "sentence dictation" that will come home Monday.  I need to see that your child is incorporating this knowledge into his/her everday writing.  This is how your child's report card grade is determined. You will also notice that we began expecting correct capitalization and punctuation this marking period. Please begin really emphasizing this in your child's writing.

Reading:  We completed our chapter book, Because of Winn Dixie, this week.  We also worked independently on chapter books, as well as focusing on identifying cause/effect, learning skills to help us decode unfamiliar vocabulary in text, and proving our answers in stories by going back to the text and highlighting before answering questions during our small group guided reading time.

Writing:  We began learning how to edit and revise a story.  We focused on correct punctuation and capitalization and making sure our sentences are complete thoughts. The children edited a story written by me. Next week, we will begin the editing process using the children's writing.

Math:  We continued to explore numbers by comparing numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to signs.  We  worked on number puzzles to show our knowledge of the hundred chart.  We made mini-books with mini-stamps to practice using the comparisons signs.  We also used chart paper with a dice game to practice our addition skills. The children worked in small groups with me to deeper understand numbers and their representations with ten rods and singles.

Science:  We began our unit on landforms. We watched an informative video on the smartboard about landforms and then played an interactive memory game to test our knowledge.

Classroom News and Announcements...

There will be no school on Tuesday due to election day!

Your child's math fact paper will be coming home on Monday. Please make sure you note which facts to be practicing with your child. As I stated in my email when we began differentiating the math fact quizzes, you've got to slowly introduce the math facts to your child. Begin with just two or three flashcards, then only add a card if your child has mastered the first cards.  Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to memorization of math facts.  All 10 cards should never be introduced to a child on the first day!  Let me know if you have tried this method and are still struggling to get your child to learn these facts.

Congratulations to Skye Taylor for being chosen as our Teacher's Helper this week!  She does an excellent job of exhibiting our rules to live by everyday in our classroom!  Way to go, Skye!

Movie Day is this Saturday!  If you are having transportation issues, please let me know and I'm sure we can work something out to get your child to my house and back home again if he/she wants to participate in this event.  It's a fun  time for us to enjoy literature and see it come to life in a movie.  You may drop your child off at 2:00.  Pick-up time is 4:30.  I'll email my home phone number later in the week in case you have trouble finding my house.
