October 25, 2010 Update...

Hello Parents,

Thank you for visiting the blog today.  We had a short but very productive week!  I enjoyed meeting with each of you and discussing your child's progress.  Check out below to see what we've been learning about this week.  Also, please visit the Classroom News section for some important announcements!

Phonics:  We learned all about the consonant blends pr, tr, dr, and br.  The children completed a picture sort and worked on sounding out the words containing these blends.

Language Arts:  This week, we learned about cause and effect in stories.  We learned how identifying these within a story can help our comprehension.  We read several stories and used organizers to help us record the effects and the causes of these effects.

Math:  We are focusing on number sense concepts this week and identifying which symbol to use when comparing two numbers.  We are identifying what is one more, one less, ten more, and ten less when given a number.  We are also continuing to work on place value and various ways to represent one number (expanded form, base ten form, written form).  We continue to practice skip counting by two, fives, and tens.  Please pay close attention to the math papers that are coming home in your child's folder to keep informed on whether or not your child is grasping these new concepts.

Classroom News:
Congratulations to Josie Kwan, whose Reflections entry came in FIRST PLACE for the visual arts category!  We are so proud of Josie and can't wait to hear how she does at the county level competition!

Kudos to all the kids who participated in last week's extra credit writing assignment!  These children will be receiving a HOMEWORK PASS that may be exchanged for any week's homework assignment!  This pass may be used ONE time.

Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for more extra credit opportunites!

Our special fall centers will be this Friday! Thank you in advance to all the moms and dads who donated time and resources to our classroom!
