We've had a wonderful and exciting week! It began with a furry new addition to our classroom...I'm sure you've heard all about Lil' Dude. The children had a few very exciting first days, but we are all settling down now and our behavior is showing how mature we've become this year! Thank you to those brave parents who volunteered to have Lil' Dude as a houseguest over the weekend. The children know that exceptional behavior here in the classroom must be exhibited before their name can be put into the Thursday drawing to see who is going to take him home. Basically, this means that children with ZERO strikes for the week will be eligible! Good luck, everyone can do it!
Phonics/Grammar: Last week, we learned the common spelling patterns for the long i sound. We also practiced our editing skills with a daily paragraph about Jane Goodall. We reviewed nouns and verbs and their roles in sentences.
Reading: We each chose and read a nonfiction book on our level. We learned the important skill of notetaking when we read. We also read out of our chapter book, Shiloh. What an awesome story! Ask your child for the latest update on what is going on with the main character, Marty. We worked in small groups on chapter books and learning good techniques for answering comprehension questions.
Math: We completed our unit on telling time. We learned all about the components of a clock as well as the many ways to write the time to the hour and half hour (digital, on an analog clock, and in words). We also learned ways to use a calendar to help us with the passage of time (What date will it be two weeks from ___? What day will it be in one week? What date was it one week ago?) Make sure you question your child on simple knowledge based calendar and time skills such as how many hours are in a day, how many days are in a week, how many seconds are in a minute, etc.
Class News...
Thank you Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Young for volunteering to help last week with AR.
Congratulations to Jack Davis for being our "Teacher's Helper" last week! What an excellent role model!
Our school dance is this Friday! The dance begins at 6:30 and ends at 9:00. Hope to see you there for the fun! I'll have my dancing shoes on...
We are currently working on money this week. It is a great time to get out that change jar and let your child practice counting sets of coins and bills. We are past the simple counting of amounts to $1.00 and have moved on to making fair trades with money and counting sets of coins and bills up to $20. This skill requires practice at home for most children. Have your child teach you the "touch money" method!
