Hi Parents,
Thank you for visiting today. We have had a wonderful week filled with lots of new learning. Check out below to find out exactly which standards we have focused on this week. Be sure to read through the Class News section for many important details and updates. Also, look to the right to update your calendar with important class and school events...
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we focused on the most common long o spelling patterns. In small groups, we sorted challenging word cards using these new rules, as well as past rules of spelling. We worked on white boards to practice our spelling patterns, we completed a cut and glue sort, and we worked on alphabetizing our words. We've hit this skill really hard and your child should be able to alphabetize words to the third letter (rope, rose, rocket) with ease. This skill is essential before we begin really hitting dictionary work next week.We also focused in on capitalization of proper nouns and using commas in a list of items during our grammar instruction.
Reading: We continued our study of nonfiction books this week. We looked specifically at the type of language used in nonfiction texts and we completed an activity on a great book on skeletons where we became the author. We worked in small groups on new chapter books and proving our answers when reading material by going back and highlighting in the text. We also worked on answering comprehension questions in complete sentences and adding detail. We began the book Clementine and started a reading response journal to show our understanding of the story.
Math: We worked on making fair trades with money and being able to show various ways to make one amount. We also worked with a specific type of word problem involving determining how much more money we will need to buy an item. We worked in small groups to review our number sense through comparing larger numbers, telling time to the hour and half hour, and practicing our math facts.
Social Studies: This week, we learned all about the life and contributions of George Washington Carver. We read a book about his life, we watched an educational video explaining his importance to our country and how his perserverance helped farmers, and we completed a smartboard activity to help us recall facts about his life.
Class News...
Thank you Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Gohlke, Mrs. Young and Mr. Garcia for their help with AR this week!
The Kemp Winter Dance is tonight from 6:30 - 9:00! Get on your dancing shoes and I'll see you on the dance floor!
Our Valentine Exchange will be Monday. Please have your child bring in enough valentines to exchange with each child (21).
We have so many students who have mastered all the addition and subtraction superstar quizzes...Way to go! When your child completes the mixed addition and subtraction minute quiz, he/she will work on mastering a 5 minute - 100 fact quiz. A great place to practice this is on the Math Magician site located on this blog under "math facts". Choose "mixed review" and get practicing!
Don't forget to encourage IXL computer work! The contest ends this Wednesday evening. The top winners will earn a pizza party in the classroom during lunch on Friday. You will be notified if your child is a winner.
One more week of school until Winter Break! There will be no school from the 21st-25th.
On that note, be on the lookout for a survey from the county coming out concerning our school calendar for next year. There is consideration in changing the balanced calendar that we adopted last year. Three options are being presented. You can view those options on the county website. If you'd like input from a teacher's perspective, I absolutely love the balanced calendar. I think the shorter summer is so beneficial in reducing the amount of regression of student learning and the frequent breaks allow the children to recharge and come to school more than eager to soak up what we have to teach them. This is my personal opinion based on what I've seen with my students.
