Dear Parents,
I hope you are planning a wonderful and relaxing spring break! I can't believe April is already here! Only two more months of school until summer...this year has literally flown by for me. As we enter the hectic spring months, remember to continue to encourage your child to slow down and do their personal best in all they do, whether that is reading a story or completing the homework packet. I have to say, we haven't had much "spring fever" in regards to behavior, but we have had many children rushing when it comes to work and not showing me their very best. I've had to have the discussion that grades can not be given on what I think a student is capable of, but rather what they show me they can do! Please take a minute with your child to reinforce this important fact of life!
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned the kn and wr spelling pattern. We generated words containing these sounds, completed a sort, and played many games to review these words. We also talked about subject verb agreement, writing complete sentences, and identifying parts of speech in a sentence (subject (noun), predicate (verb).
Reading: We completed our unit on folktales and fables. Your child will be bringing home their folktale folder on Friday. This is a great opportunity for you to have your child practice orally retelling a story. All the stories are short and easy to remember. We read some classic folktales and some that were new to us. Please take a minute to review the UNRAAVEL strategy page that is stapled to the front inside cover of your child's folder. It is a great resource on how to help your child read and comprehend better all the way until the high school and college level.
Math: We continued our exploration of number representation in higher numbers. We did some more exercises with rounding and we also worked on showing the models of the value of a digit in a number. We took our problem solving preassessment for this nine week period.
Social Studies: We began our unit on historical folktales with a book about John Henry. See if your children can tell you all about him!
