March 25th Update...

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting!  Thanks also to those parents who sent in the "secret" phrase from last week. We had a few kids who got to visit the prize box...Let's try for 100%  this week. Write the word "multiplication" on a piece of paper and have your child give it to me by Monday morning for a homework pass!  Check out the math section to find out why we are writing this word!  See what else we've done this week below...

Phonics/Grammar:  This week, we learned the "oi" and "au" spelling pattern.  We also practiced our ABC order skills using these words that we generated. We also learned how to determine when an apostrophe s is needed to show possession in a noun.

Reading:  We began our unit on folktales this week.  We focused particularly on using the UNRAAVEL strategy to improve our comprehension. Next week, you will get a Folktale Folder with all the stories we've done, as well as a sheet explaining the strategy that the children are learning.  We also enjoyed reading our chapter book, FRAMED.  We used a reading response journal to express our feelings about the book.

Math:  This week, we worked on our number sense and number representation.  We reviewed place value and learned that every digit in a number has a "home" or place that determines its value.  We worked on showing our knowledge of place value. We also reviewed the rules for rounding numbers to the nearest ten. This seems like an easy skill for us adults, but it is a multi-step process for kids and can be confusing. Please work on this at home.  First, your child must determine which two numbers the number falls between and then whether to round up or round down. We'll continue this next week as well!  In our math facts practice, many children have gotten all the way through addition and subtraction and have started working on memorization of multiplication facts. Way to go, students!

Class News and Reminders...

Our teacher's helper this week was Connor Turner!  Way to go, Connor!

Thank you to Mr. Garcia, Mr. Petty, and Mrs. DeFreece for helping our class with AR this week.

We are still in need of Clorox wipes, dry erase markers, and baby wipes. Please consider donating if you have not done so. Thank you!

Spring break is in one more week!  There will be no school from April 2-10.

Parent volunteers will not be allowed in the school during CRCT testing. This will run from April 12-21.  I've canceled all AR parents during this time. Please be aware that parents will not be allowed in the building on these days. (mornings only)
