March 18th Update...

Thank you for visiting today!  I hope you find this week's information useful. We are wrapping up the end of the school year...I can't believe we've begun our final nine weeks!  I plan to utilize every minute the children are in school with me, so I'm going to be tough on anyone exhibiting a case of spring fever! I want to give these children every opportunity to be overly prepared for 2nd grade.

Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned the spelling patterns -oy and -aw.  We generated a list of words containing these sounds.  We also completed a sort separating the words containing the sounds.  We then put our words in ABC order. In grammar, we worked on alphabetizing words that contain the first beginning letters, particularly focusing on how to alphabetize words and then words with endings (ie zoo/zookeeper, teacher/teachers).

Reading:  We continue to use the UNRAAVEL strategy to help improve our comprehension of reading passages.  We also focused on picking out main idea/details and story elements.  We listened to then retold several stories.  In small groups, we worked on our oral reading fluency and our retelling skills.  The children have been told that when they show me really good expression and fluency, I will email the teacher of their choice for them to read to that class!

Math:  This week, we discussed strategies for solving challenging word problems. We made a chart to help us identify these problems and then plan for the solution. We also played several games to review telling time, counting sets of coins, and identifying place value.

Social Studies: We learned the 7 continents and the 5 oceans (yes, there are now 5 unlike the 4 when we were in school!  See if your child can tell you it!) We played a smart board timed game to see how quickly we can identify  them.

Class News and Reminders...

I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Dr. and Mrs. Kwan for the awesome dental health lesson they did for our class today! The kids were so attentive and learned so much from this lesson.  Dr. Kwan also sent us all home with so many goodies!

Congratulations to Arturo Cordova for being chosen as this week's teacher's helper!  Way to go!

Thank you to Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Turner, and Mrs. Kho-Han for helping us with AR this week!

For this final nine weeks, if your child receives a strike on the behavior sheet, he or she will be filling out the comment section on why the strike was given.  Hopefully this will help the communication with you.  I don't foresee many of these being given, though!

Moms, tentatively save the date of May 6th for us!  We are planning a very special day to honor you and we want all moms to be here with us. I'm thinking our special activity will take place at 8:00 in the morning, but I'll send more specific details as the date approaches. Pencil us in on those calendars!

We have a handful of students out on Friday, so we will take our superstar quizzes on Monday!  You'll have extra study time, so those tests should reflect that!

Write the words "SPRING FEVER" on a piece of paper and have your child turn it in to me first thing MONDAY morning for a prize!
