PARENTS NEEDED...

Your presence is requested at our Atlanta Zoo field trip!  This is one of the two field trips first grade will be taking this spring and we want to make some fun and exciting memories for the students.  ALL parents are welcome to come and chaperone.  If you are interested, simply include the extra $ with your child's donation in the envelope and circle that you are going to chaperone.  Please remember, if you are chaperoning, you will be in charge of a group of students. This is the reason that no younger siblings are allowed to come on the trip. We need your full attention to be devoted to managing your group of students.  As the trip draws near, we will provide all chaperones with instructions for the day.

As for the Center for Puppetry Arts field trip, indicate if you would like to be considered to chaperone this trip.  We are only allowed to take one extra adult because of space limitations.  I will contact the parent who is chosen to chaperone this field trip.

Please return the permission slip and $ as soon as possible.  Do not put the permission slip inside the envelope.  Leave it stapled as is and return it to school.

I am sooooo  proud of the students this week (as usual!).  We took our math benchmark assessment and BLEW it out of the water!  I'm amazed at the learning your children are doing this year!  We also began taking the SRI (scholastic reading inventory) and you will be getting results of this test as your child completes it.  This is a reading assessment and I have been thrilled with the class results. I've seen amazing gains since the 2nd nine week period.

Here's what we've been doing this week in class...

Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned all about the two sounds of the letters "oo".  We also talked about how verbs change tense.  We learned about regular and irregular verbs.

Reading:  We practiced identifying the main idea of a nonfiction and fiction text. We also discussed details. We used organizers to record our retelling. We then showed off our keyboarding skills and wrote a paragraph using our organizer as our plan. I met with children individually to assess their progress this grading period. We also began retaking the SRI. Look for results!

Math:  We reviewed challenging concepts in preparation for our benchmark assessment.  We also went into an in depth study of higher level word problems. We began exploring word problems that do not follow a pattern we have previously learned.  We use pictures to help us solve these problems.  We began exploring multiplication and division in the context of word problems.

Science: We completed our unit on plants and began previewing our animal unit.  We will begin studying animal comparisons next week.

Class News and Reminders...

Please plan to attend next Thursday's ART show and TALENT show.  The ONLY reason I am performing in the talent show is to get a good laugh out of my sweet students, so your presence is requested!  God did not bless me with rhythm, so don't expect much!

THANK YOU so much to the Petty family, the Henry family, the Young family, the Jouanet family, and the Mizerek family for their book donations this week!  The kids get so excited when we add books to our classroom library and I LOVE it!

Thank you to Mrs. DeFreece, Mrs. Petty, and Mrs. Tovar for sending in some of the classroom items that we needed!

The art show/talent show is Thursday, March 17th.  You may purchase your child's framed art and then join us for a wonderful night of talent right here at Kemp.

Remember, March 18th is now a full school day for students.

Thank you Mrs. Gohlke, Mrs. Henry, and Mrs. Tovar for helping us out with AR this week.

I also just wanted to say thank you for supporting high expectations with writing at home. I saw a dramatic improvement in the homework stories!  Keep up the great work!
