Hi Parents,
First of all, thank you so much to all the parents who participated in our zoo field trip! The kids had an amazing time and they learned a lot about animals, their habitats, and how they are alike and different. I can't believe we are down the few remaining weeks of the school year! Check out below to find out what we've done in class this week and what important announcements you need to know...
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned about the hard and soft c spelling pattern (k and s sounds). We also continued our alphabetizing skills and used them in context of working with dictionary skills. We reviewed three parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives) and we began talking about using quotation marks to set off spoken words in text.
Reading: We are all working in chapter books this week. The children are reading a chapter a day independently and then completing a comprehension/skill worksheet that correlates with what we are doing in class. We are reading the book Framed together and can't wait to find out if the main character, Griffin Bing, gets out of the trouble he is in! We worked with our book buddies on a Reader's Theater play to help our oral reading fluency.
Math: We used manipulatives (ten rods and ones) to help us understand double digit subtraction. We also learned how to use picture models to help us subtract correctly. We used dry erase markers to draw models on our tables! Sometimes writing on furniture can be good!
Social Studies: We learned all about Annie Oakley and why she is an American historical figure. We read a book about her and created a graphic organizer telling about the important parts of her life.
Dinner Conversation Starters (use the following prompts below to get your child talking about school!)...
*Ask your child one cool trick Annie Oakley could do with her gun!
*Ask your child to illustrate what to do if the ones in a double digit addition problem equals more than nine.
*Ask your child to explain what character they are in their Reader's Theater play and also to tell you the main idea of their story.
*Ask your child to think of an object in your house and to give you five adjectives that describe it.
*Ask your child to tell you all about Griffin Bing and what kind of trouble he is in right now.
Class News and Reminders...
Mom, May 6th at 8:30 will be our special event. The children are working very hard on something for you that they will present in a very special way on that day. I also have a surprize for you and would love for you all to attend if at all possible.

Blue folders and behavior sheets will come home on Monday since so many children were checked out early. Make sure to help your child stay focused all the way through the end of the year on spelling words each week and learning those math facts.
