Hi Parents,
We've had such a busy week, with all of our extra activities going on! We managed to get in a lot of really important academic skills as well. Please take a minute to read over the academic areas below so you can stay on top of what is expected at this time of the year.
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned all about the hard and soft g sounds. We played a game with cards creating "g" words. How many were you able to make? We also reviewed the importance of MAKING NOISE when we are sounding out challenging words. As the children begin to write longer, more detailed sentences, the skill of segmenting words and sounding them out becomes really important. Please emphasize this at home! We also learned what a HOMERUN sentence is. Can your child tell you what it is???? I am looking for sentences that include what? when? and where? in the details. Example... A first base sentence would be "I like pizza." A HOMERUN would be "After my ballgame, I like to eat cheese pizza from Johnny's."
Writing: This week, we continued to write our response to literature papers. We completed three this week. I have scored one and sent it home with comments for you to see what is expected. On the scoring page, you will notice that the children's papers are being scored on content as well as conventions (spelling, capitalization, sub/verb agreement). Please take a minute to go over this with your child. Our report card directly reflects what I put on that grade sheet.
Math: This week, we completed our double digit subtraction unit.
Class News and Reminders...
Thank you to those parents who generously donated to the spring fling basket and cake walk! You are awesome!
Thank you to Mrs. Tovar, who spent hours helping Mrs. Mascheri with the BUGZ performance! It was so adorable!
Thank you to Mrs. Young for stepping up and providing snack last minute this week!
Spring Fling is tonight! See you from 6:00-9:00 right here at Kemp for some fun and food!
Please consider participating in the Boosterthon. I know sometimes we feel like we are constantly giving more to school, but this money provides Kemp with so many beneficial programs and resources that help to make us GREAT! We all know the toys the kids are winning are worth far less than what it takes to earn those toys, but it is about donating to our school, not winning toys. We are now up to $10 a lap for our classroom.
The kids have earned their first reward for the Boosterthon...Your child may bring in an "electronic" game of their choice on Monday to play with at recess. Please make it clear to your child that whatever they choose to bring is their responsibility to keep up with. I will not be responsible for any lost or broken toys...especially since I know the cost of these ELECTRONIC toys! Make sure your child knows that these toys MUST NOT be taken out on the bus or anywhere other than our classroom!
The Fun Run is next Thursday, May 5th. Make sure you dress your child appropriately for running laps! Shirts will come home next week.
