Hi Parents,
Wow! They say time flies when you're having fun...that was the case with my school year! I so enjoyed getting to know you and your child this year. Please keep in touch with me and let me know how he/she is doing! Below, you will find some activities to do with your child to keep that brain active all summer long. Regression of skills learned is more pronounced in younger school-aged children, and just doing some simple activities with your child about 20 minutes a day will make a HUGE difference when 2nd grade begins in the fall. I hope you find these suggestions useful.
Phonics/Grammar: Give your child a longer word like "vacation" or "roller coaster" and see how many smaller words they can make using only the letters in that word. Have a contest to see who can make more! Give your child a newspaper article and have him/her find 10 verbs, 10 nouns and 10 adjectives. Make a list of 20 random words. Give them to your child and have him/her cut them out. They can sort them, and tell you how they sorted them (ie...all these words are one syllable, all these are two syllable, or all these words have short vowels and all these words have long vowels. Remember, don't think of categories when you are making the list. Have your child determine how to sort them on their own.
Writing: Read the first paragraph or two of a book/story. Have your child rewrite the ending of the story on his/her own. Cut out a picture from a magazine. Challenge your child to write 5 homerun sentences about the picture. Encourage your child to write a letter to someone in your family. Make sure to include all 5 parts of a letter!
Math: Give your child a three digit number. Have your child show that number in word form, base ten form, place value form, and expanded form. Repeat with another number! Have your child think of a survey question. Ask ten people the question, using tally marks to keep up with answers. Turn the survey into a graph (picture graph, bar graph, or pie graph!). CHALLENGE: Do all three graphs! Give your child a number like 45. See how many addition and subtraction problems they can make with the answer of 45 (ie. 20+25, 47-2, 100-55, etc).
Have fun this summer and stay safe! Remember to read at least 20 minutes a night and come back in the fall SMARTER than when you left! See you guys all in August!
