May 19th Update...

Hi Parents,

Thank you for visiting the blog today.  We are using every last minute we have to learn all that we can learn before second grade!  Of course, we've planned some fun as well!  Check out our schedule below to find out what fun things we'll be doing every day. Also, see what standards we've been covering in the subject areas this past week.

Phonics/Grammar:  We learned all about the long vowel followed by a consonant spelling pattern and what to do when adding suffixes to the root word.  We also reviewed the four sentence types (asking, telling, command, and exclamation).  We discussed the different punctuation needed for each type as well, then we wrote an example of each.

Writing:  We were introduced to the persuasive style of writing last week.  We learned that this style of writing is meant to convince others that your opinion is correct.  We wrote a paper in answer to the question, "Are you a good student?"  The children did a wonderful job with this challenging genre of writing.

Math:  We took our final quarter benchmark assessment.  Our class average was a 92%!  Way to rock this test, students!

Our special days planned for the end of the year go as follows...

Bubble Day Friday:  We will be completing scientific investigations with bubble gum, writing descriptive paragraphs using bubble gum, and watching a cool science experiment with mentos and diet coke!
Baseball Day Monday: We are playing a fun day of kickball against some other 1st grade classes, listening to a story about baseball, and playing baseball addition and subtraction in our room!
Chef Day Tuesday:  YUM...We'll be writing our own recipes, then making personal pizzas as well as other treats this day. We will be reviewing math concepts such as fractions and equal parts on this day as well.
Beach Day Wednesday:  We will be reading fun stories about summer time, exercising our word problem knowledge with some fun summer math problems, and making a special snack.

Classroom News and Reminders...

Congratulations to Katie Sullivan for earning Teacher's Helper this week!

Congratulations to Eric Kho for his fantastic persuasive writing paragraph on why he should be Lil' Dude's new owner...He persuaded the judge that he should be!

Bookbags will not be allowed on the bus the last day of school.  We will send everything home earlier in the week.

Last quarter report cards will be mailed to you. If I do not have a self-addressed stamped envelope, I will email you.  If you do not send one in, the report card will be up here in the office for you to pick up.
