October 14 Update...

Hello Parents,

What a great birthday week this has been!  Thank you again for making my day so special. Nothing beats being a teacher when it comes to celebrating birthdays.  I'm getting prepared this week to speak with all of you during our parent teacher conference.  This is a very important time where we can discuss your child's strengths and weaknesses.  If you are going to be late or cannot make the conference, please let me know so I can reschedule.  We only have 20 minutes alotted per conference and I'll have to stay on a tight schedule.
Please check out below to see what we've been doing in class this week...

Phonics/Grammar:  This week, we learned all about the sp, sm, and sk blend.  We created a word chart, practiced writing these words on white boards, and completed a sort in our Word Study Notebook.  We also learned the role verbs play in sentences.  We worked in our journals to identify verbs in sentences, then we picked out two pictures from magazines and created a sentence, paying special attention to the verb.

Reading: This week, we learned how to expand our details when completing a story retelling graphic organizer by watching this being modeled.  At this point, every child should be able to identify the main character, setting (specific), and four events in order (using transition words).  We took two final assessments on story retelling. We also worked in small groups on oral reading fluency. We completed independent contract pages on our tub books working on such skills as phonics, prereading strategies, and story retelling.  We also read with Mrs. Wadsworth to determine our independent reading level.

Writing: We began learning about the important components of a personal narrative. The children have learned that every personal narrative needs to include who was there, where we were, and when the event took place. Then at least four descriptive details need to be given along with a "cool closing".  Come by your child's conference early to check out the latest writing sample in the hallway!

Math: We learned how to place "touch points" on coins to help us easily count sets.  These "touch points" equal 5 and there are zero on the penny, one on the nickel, two on the dime, and five on the quarter. Ask your child to help show you where the points go.  We are counting combinations of coins up to 99 cents.  We also worked on showing "fair trades" with various amounts of money. After this week's instruction, your child should know how to show a given amount of money at least two different ways.  We also worked in our hundred board magic books on learning how to do "arrow math".  This is intended to teach your child mental math strategies for addition and subtraction. I would be happy to show you these books when you come in for conferences.

Class News...

Tonight is Kemp-Camp-O-Ree!  Check the Kemp website for specific details.

Congratulations to Evelyn Merchant for being chosen as our teacher's helper this week and congratulations to Drew Connor for being chosen as last week's teacher's helper!  Way to go on that excellent behavior.

Thank you to Mrs. Samiec for donating tons of books, puzzles, and puppets to our classroom!  I LOVE classroom donations!

Our treasure box could always use refilling...Send in any old McDonald's toys, ect. ect!

Make sure you are devoting a few minutes a night to math facts!  Some of those scores made me cry today!  As we continue through the facts, the kids really do need to memorize rather than count in their head.
