Hi Parents,
Thank you for taking a minute to keep up with what we've been doing in class. We've had an awesome week. It's been really rewarding for me as I prepare for conferences next week. I get the chance to reflect on each student and look at the fabulous progress we've made in just nine weeks. I can't wait to meet with each of you next week. On a lighter note, the war between Mrs. Beames and I is officially on! Although she managed to bribe ONE student of mine who shall remain nameless (yes, I was sold out for a measly bag of skittles!), she is on her way down! I'm sure the kids will give you all the details of our battles over who will kiss the pig! Keep those dollars coming in!
Phonics: This week, we learned about three more s blends. We brainstormed a list of words containing these sounds, we worked on whiteboards to apply the spelling rules we have learned, and we completed a sort in our Words Their Way Notebooks.
Reading: We began learning about cause and effect to deepen our understanding of stories. We learned that the effect answers the question "What happened?" and the cause answers the question "Why did that happen?" We read three different Jimmy's Boa books and completed graphic organizers identifying cause/effect in the stories. We also worked in small groups on such skills as oral reading fluency, inferencing, and finding the author's purpose for writing a story.
Writing: We learned how to tell what's called a "pocket story". It is a strategy for teaching children to tell a story in order, making sure each detail is a complete thought. I modeled this strategy for the children and then they told their own pocket stories. Encourage your child to tell you a pocket story!
Math: We began learning how to compare larger numbers this week in math. We learned the terms "greater than", "less than", and "equal to". We also learned strategies for ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. We completed several review activities on graphing, adding/subtracting, and showing ten more and ten less than a number. In addition to this, we worked together to solve word problems every day using our four square method.
