November 4th Update...

We have had a really good week!  Can you believe it is already November?  We are entering a really busy time of the year. I would like to encourage you to try and keep your child on a structured routine with homework and reading.  The greatest determining factor of success in school is your child's ability to read and understand the what is read. Together, let's make sure we are  providing your child with as many opportunities as possible to achieve this!  Make sure you check out below in the "classroom news" section for some very important upcoming dates.

Phonics/Grammar:  This week, we learned all about the l-blends.  We worked on whiteboards to go over first grade phonics rules, we played a sort on the smartboard, we generated a list of words that we've gone over all week, and we worked in our Word Study Notebooks sorting the l-blend words.  We also discussed adjectives and we read a monster book.  We then created our own monsters and generated a list of adjectives to describe them.  I was so impressed with the illustrations on this assignment!  These monster creations are hanging in our hallway and will be coming home soon.

Reading: We are learning how to identify the problem and solution in a story to deepen our comprehension of what we read.  We read the stories Chicken Little and Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, then completed a four square organizer stating the character/setting/problem/solution.  We worked in small groups on reading fluency, decoding unfamiliar words by "sliding" through the word, and making inferences.  We worked with our bookbuddies. They modeled using expression when reading.

Writing: We focused on "hooking" the reader's attention in a narrative. We learned two "hooks" this week; beginning with a question or adding a sound.  Check out your child's narratives that are coming home this week!  At this point, your child should be writing a hook, topic sentence, at least four details, and a cool closing. Whew!

Math:  We reviewed representing numbers (using money, symbols > < =, ordering numbers, and counting by 10's) and we took another unit test.  We also revisited money, making "fair trades" for various amounts. This is a great skill to practice at home. Give your child an amount of money and ask if they can represent it three different ways.  We also visited the computer lab to practice our math facts on math magician.

Science: We learned all about sound this week. We learned that sound is a form of energy.  Sound is created by vibrations that travel through the air and vibrate our eardrum. We learned about volume and pitch as well.
