One more week until Thanksgiving Break! Can you believe we are already at the halfway point through the second quarter? Today, you will notice several important assessments coming home. Please make sure to discuss the character/setting/problem/solution organizer with your child. This type of response after listening to a story will heavily determine your child's reading grade. Also, notice the spelling assessment. Make sure your child is able to apply the spelling rules to the words that are on the dictation sentences on the back of the paper. Our 1st grade standard states that children apply correct spelling within the context of their writing. We've also added the standard of applying capitalization and punctuation rules when writing this quarter. I've been so pleasantly surprized with the children's writing! Most seem to really have a strong grasp of these three areas when writing.
Phonics/Grammar: This week, we learned about several r and l blends. We generated a list of words containing these sounds. We competed our word study sort. We practiced applying these spelling rules as we wrote on our dry erase boards. We also continued our study of adjectives. We made scarecrows, then thought of adjectives and nouns to describe our scarecrow.
Reading: We focused on identifying the problem and solution in a story as well as stating the main idea. We read several books and completed an organizer together, then we listened to The Very Greedy Bee and showed how we could complete an organizer on our own. We worked in small groups on such skills as decoding unfamiliar words, reading fluency and inferencing.
Math: This week, we practiced solving open ended constructed responses where we have to come up with a plan all on our own. We worked in small groups and then explained to the class how we solved these very challenging math problems. We also reviewed and added some clue words to our operation magnifying glasses that we use to help us determine whether to add or subtract in the word problem. We woked with our book buddies to complete 8 different kinds of word problems. We also learned how to make equal shares from a given set.
Social Studies: This week we learned all about Thomas Jefferson and his contributions. We learned that he loved to read as a child, sometimes reading for 14 hours a day! We learned he was an inventor, a lawyer and eventually, our third President. He also helped to write the Declaration of Independence, giving the colonies our independence from England.
Class News...
Congratulations to Colin Moore for being chosen as this week's Teacher's Helper! Way to go, Colin!
Do you have TONS of individually wrapped halloween candy you'd like to see out of your house? Send it in! Our candy jars could use some more candy!
If you have not done so, please return the movie permission slip. Keep in mind, this movie will replace our fun friday time next week, so your child will be responsible for earning this special activity.
We have four children who have successfully made it through all the addition facts in SuperStar and are now working on subtraction! Congratulations to Drew, Evan, Aubrey, and Frank! WooHoo!
